Realtek 1.17 Drivers (KB888111) 03/08/2005

The Realtek Mirror site is still working and has v1.17. But it has KB888111 same as 1.16. If you had problems 1.16 you will have problems with 1.17

http://w3serv.realtek.com.tw/downloa...Audio%20CODECs

They work fine for me as long as I extract the files and delete the MSHDQFE folder. I did install the latest Smartlink Modem files
http://www.smlink.com/content.aspx?id=126
and it does stop the BSOD when installing KB888111 but after reboot the Modem stops working. Then it tries to continuously find the modem drivers but can not be satisfied. So I formated my test partition and forgeting about it until Smartlink has some new drivers. There appears to a solid mismatch between KB888111 and the Smartlink Modem. The ones who get it to work most have something different with the modem or sound connection.

1. I would update the Smartlink Modem Drivers. This will avoid the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death).

2. If you want to take chance create a Restore Point. Then just download the 1.17 Drivers and install. If when you reboot and your system keeps trying install the modem drivers then uninstall KB888111 from ADD/Remove Programs. Then use the restore point you created earlier.

3. If you want to be safe use something like Winzip to extract the files to a folder of your choice. Delete the MSHDQFE folder. Then run the setup.exe and the drivers will install w/o a problem.

Some people have had no problem installing the drivers and I am not sure what the difference is. I was one of first one to get mine so I suspect the modem itself.

How do you get the realtek icon back in the systray? I updated to a newer driver a few weeks ago, and now it's gone. but on the plus side, laptop sounds great.

Under Control Panel open up 'Sound Effects Manger' then 'General' button. Right above the language setting is a little round dot next to 'Show icon in system tray'. When you click on it the clor should change to orange.

They sound better than the CD drivers but beyond that I can't really tell.
