You do not have to do this(unless you are installing Win98). All you have to do is boot from the XP CD & it will give you the option to format the HD at that point, it's not like installing Win98 used to be

Why do you say that?? The C drive can be 5 gigs & all the games can be installed to a different partition or different HD altogether.

Yeah.. a windows partition is just that.. Windows. everything esle, personal stuff, goes on the D: partition..

If you get the 8890, make sure you eject the MP3 player from the rig before installing any OS or drivers.
better to have all your games on the c partition

and no you boot to the flopy cause you can fdisk,

man some people sure dont know there stuff

c drive to install all your games and such is the way to go, dont listen to the fruits who tell you other wise
post #29 of 57
what's ur reasoning?
easy the hd doesnt have to access other areas outside the fixed c:

allowing for faster access of data
I wouldn't call them fruits, but yes, if you have a large C partition for just the OS and then a D partition for everything else, the drive must seek through the empty space to the slower accessed inside of the platter, slowing transfer down.

Plus, you get last wasted space with 1 partition.

ANd if you don't know what a partition is in the first place, you needn't mess around with many partitions, cause you will loose data if you don't know what you're doing.

Hehe... wow.. talk about wrong.

Listen man. Install windows on a 2gb partition. put everything else on the rest. Unlike what they say, the HDD will work the same. but, more importantly, you wont lose data and stuff if you reinstall windows.

Look who's talking, there is absolutely no reason whatever that games should be installed to the C drive. You have no idea what you are talking about.

I install all my sons games to a dedicated game hard drive & they work perfectly that way. If I have to format the C drive & reinstall Windows, the games will still need to be re-installed, but all his saved games & settings etc. will not be lost.

You dumb ass, you don't have to FDISK to install WindowsXP, all you have to do is boot from the XP CD.

and dumb ass a non formated hd will not show up.

are you stupider than stupid? you act it why do you think a new hd has to be fdisked first to be read.

i k now your heads up your ass but didnt think it was so far

oh boy and you call your self Microsoft?
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000 Pro/Server/Adv server/Datacenter and the other
Windows XP Home/Pro
Windows 2003 blahblahblah versions

have partitioning tools built in and is done in it's TEXT setup mode. even if you pre Fdisk and configured your partition you will still have to use the Textmode setup disk screens to selecte which partition to install on. unless you have made a unattended install script which it can still be done without pre fdisk as the script will configure the HDD the way your script is written.

if the HDD is in the bios it'll show up long as the installer knows how to read the bios it's not up to Fdisk, Fdisk just read the bios and creates the hdd for DOS 16bit level access.

gentlemen, gentlemen. think about what you're arguing about. how can you people possibly get so upset over this? however, i would like to know which way is better so instead of simply saying "ya-huh" and "nuh-uh" back and forth, could some of you send a link or somesuch to back up what you're saying? the concept of having games and such on a different partition is cool, but i wouldn't do it if it would be a major hit to performance.
