Even if you do boot from a Win98 boot disc & format & partition with FDISK, you cannot format as NTFS(only FAT 32). Granted, XP will install to a FAT 32 disc, but then you lose all the many advantages of NTFS unless you convert to NTFS at a later time(a totally unnecessary step since you can do it during the install if you simply boot from the XP CD.
I ordered my 8890 with no OS & simply formatted the HD as NTFS after booting from the XP CD(the new, unformatted HD showed up just fine)
