MSXINC HAS introduced an emulator called Cherry OS which it claims allows you to run Mac OS X on a Windows XP operating systems.

The $50 package comes with an installer which allows both CherryOS and OS X to be installed - and allows the use of a number of Mac applications including Safari and Apple Mail.

The system requires a Pentium 4 1.6GHz CPU or equivalent, 512MB of memory, and 3GB of hard drive space, but doesn't come with OS X, which can be downloaded separately from the Apple site.

As well as the $50 price tag for the product, the firm is also offering a free download to evaluate the product.

The software allows network access, Altivec G4 emulation, and supports sound, and CD-DVD drive access.

There is a freeware piece of software that does a similar thing. Pear PC. More information here, which notes that Cherry OS is available now.

Definitely a cheaper alternative to shelling out for a Mac Mini. There is a free trial for download and $50 to purchase. Useful for anyone wanting to see what OSX is all about. Cool beans for new users and users using multiple platforms.

Requirments:
* PC with Intel® (Pentium®, Pentium M®, Xeon™) or AMD (Athlon™, Opteron™, Duron™) processor. Processor must be at least 1.6 GHz.
* 512MB RAM (1GB recommended)
* 5GB of available hard-drive space (10GB recommended)
* CD ROM Drive

I heard that also. I was excited by the release of CherryOS, but it seems that they just ripped off PearPC's codes. I'm not pissed though.

but we all know that pearpc is really slow and really a long way from version 1.0....so till then...shell out for a mac or get linux on your dos box
post #5 of 41
um i tried it, but where am i to get OSX Image or CD?

And abf, you're missing the point of pearpc entirely.

It's an amazing programme because, while there have been PowerPC emulators, none have ever been able to run OS X. Now ANYONE can try out OS X as long as they have PearPC and a copy of OS X handy.

Stop telling people to get Linux. It's annoying and incredibly counterproductive.

kakaze - it IS a viable solution for those stuck on x86 though.

Its not annoying, Linux gets the job done quickly and effectively if you know what your doing

Isn't OSX Linux?

The reason I was considering getting a mac was for the linux feature so I could do my hw and crud.

Xarthan—OS X is a direct descendant of Unix via BSD. You can do pretty much everything on OS X that you can do on Linux, but it's not Linux.

h00ligan—Linux is a viable solution for x86? Sure, if you're not a home user and know something about computers and don't need anything specific to Windows, but otherwise Linux is just a fringe OS that only a small portion of the world can use effectively.

EDIT: Oh, and I meant abf's constant telling people to get Linux was annoying and counterproductive, not that Linux was annoying and counterproductive.

i am with kakaze on this, firstly this is a mac forum unless you own a mac this section should not be of any real interest to you (aimed at abf).

and i tired out cherry os trail with my copy of os x, but after 30 minuets of waiting for the installer to start i gave up. pear pc is far faster and it is free just not as easy to use.

both these emulators are not in anyway useable for any form of work, but they allow you to evaluate mac os x and just see what it has before going and buying one.

and yes i did play around with pear pc before buying my powerbook.

i do admit that pearpc is amazing just in a sence that it can run osx on x86, i tried it myself, it was cool, amazingly slow, but cool regardless. for productive os x emulation, it is useless till version 0.9 at the earliest. and in this case i said "get linux" because linux is practicaly mac os x (yes...there are technical differances, but home users dont know that) and running linux effectively resolves most of the issues that windows users have (thus i said...put linux on your DOS BOX).

and i would not say "get linux" just for the hell of it, i usually say it when it applies. for instance a person says he/she is tiered of linux, so i tell them to try linux on their old box (so they don't have to get mac hardware to try os x just to escape windows). or some1 would say they are sick of how slow XP is....linux, if setup correctly runs faster and is not infested with spyware and viruses. and so on.....

To say "linux is practicaly (sic) mac os x" is to show how ignorant of OS X you truly are.
post #13 of 41
kakaze, i agree.. i run it on a server here, but will not use it as a dekstop environment.

Typically from a gui stand point i find windows faster, and easier. Could i use linux as my desktop os.. sure at this point i could. Would i .. no way. I appreciate major application support too much.

That's the real kicker with os x. You get the rock solid unix stability.. with major app support. To me that rocks. The only thing that turned me off the pb was the fact they are dragging so much bootie getting a dual core g4 or a g5 in there. It's their weak link.

Eh, I wouldn't call linux a fringe OS overall. In the end user market sure, business/server world, no way. I've been waiting 5 years for them to make a decent variation for the home market and they are just in the past year or so releasing decent systems for that (like Suse).
post #15 of 41
Yes, no one is disputing that Linux is popular in the sever world, but as I said, as far as home users are concerned it's a fringe OS.

so bobax.....lets say you were a life long windows user, just recently bought a nice spec box, and you got sick of WinXP all of a sudden, would you spank out $1500 for new hardware and leave your old system in the ditch collecting dust, or would you save the $, and just make the most of your current box (while aviding microsoft)

that is not my issues and i honestly dont care, i am just requesting that you stop lying / bullshitting in the mac forums.

i own a pc and a mac and i use them both for different proposes and they are both put to good use, while my pc is idle it is donating cpu cycles to medical research and while it is not i am playing games or another member of my family is using it.

buying a mac does not mean ditching your pc, that is the point you fail to see.

abf unless you own a mac please leave this section of these notebook forums i am yet to see you make comments that make any sense.
