This is easy. IBM T43.

It is business model built. Rugged and solid machine.

Same Internals but the Sony is just so much smaller and easier to carry around. I have used both and trust me...i'll never go back to a 14.1...Unless it's a desktop replacement, then i would go 15.x or larger screen.

My $0.02
hi, could you be more specific why you'd choose sony s380 over ibm t43 please.

thanks.

Just to give you a glimps..

I am typing to you an IBM T22. I still have the T21 also going strong. LOL!

I use it for business travel. Airport, hammering it constantly. It will last!

Sony is lighter
better bat life, even w/o extended
better gpu, x300 suxs
no-brainer

btw drop the s-380 and buy the s-360 with the 9700 gpu
way outpreforms the x300
the 6200gpu sucks even more than the x300, as it only has 32mb dedicated memory, the rest comes from the ram

if you have to custumize your laptop buy the s-270 which you can customize for the 9700 on the website

so even if the IBM T43 has those internal components (ie 2.0 cpu 512 pc2-400 1 stick) you would rather go with sony s380.

and basicly you'd go with sony s380 because of weight, batt life and video card power.

thanks i really appriciate your opinions.

EDIT: but the s360 isnt sonoma right? (just wondering)... i owned a s270 time ago but returned it because of heat and noise issues.

i would not get the 380, please get the 270 please

The x300 in the T43 should give you gaming performance roughly equivalent to that of a Radeon 9600non-pro. The 6200 in the Sony, although a capable GPU, is crippled by the lack of dedicated VRAM. Besides, an IBM will survive a nuclear holocaust, cockroaches, and John Goodman. A sony...well, let's just put it this way.

Oh, and the S360 isn't sonoma, but believe me, the 533mhz FSB isn't that much of an improvement and DDR2400 usually ends up being a bit slower than the DDR333 in the S360.

lol, very nice comments, thank you.

but why is it that DDR2-400 (533mhz) is slower than DDR333?
and what would your vote be?

***in either systems can the video card be upgradable ???***

Nope. I voted for the Sony for one reason: it's stylish. The two machines are comparable. The IBM has the better build quality, but the Sony has a nicer screen and is more stylish.

I'm not sure of the exact reason, but it probably has something to do with the atrocious memory timings of DDR2 in general, which basically makes it's slight speed margin over DDR333 insignificant. I believe that the videocard in the IBM would be upgradeable, as it is completely discrete graphics, but i'm not sure of the Sony since it uses partially shared memory. The sony may be stylish, but honestly: in an airport, the more stylish something is (or the more it says Sony on it), the more likely it is to be filched.

Oh, and if it wasn't obvious, my vote is for the T43.

Not sure so don't quote me...do some research.
Just a comment on the change of ownership:

IBM recently sold its PC division to Lenovo in China. It was approved a few days ago by the DOJ/Government. However, the changeover will take some time, since you can't just pop a new factory up overnight. Lenovo has agreed to a certain quality level, I believe. However, that may not last long, since they can only use the IBM name on their computers for the next few years. However, I would not really worry about quality at this point (maybe a year from now).

EDIT: My vote is for the IBM T43 because of quality. I really don't think weight is a problem (I've walked all over with a 9lb laptop and with a 2lb HP Jornada 820, it's all the same to me). While Sony arguably makes the world's best TVs/Camcorders/other consumer electronics, their PC division (esp. support) is one of the worst. Note, this is my opinion only, from having worked with Sony computer hardware and having talked to their tech. support.

zakaluka2.
