Anybody else planning to upgrade 9300 to Pentium M 770 2.13ghz?

I plan to order a Pentium M 770 2.13ghz after I get my 9300 and replace the processor it came with and sell it on eBay. I notice that buying the difference between the 770 and the 760 online is only $200, but Dell charges $300 for the upgrade (on the XPS2). I would have bought the 770 on the 9300 if they offered it, but as yet, they do not. Any reason why it wouldn't work to upgrade it myself?

The only issue might be the BIOS. You should check to make sure it is supported.

Considering that upgrade will give you a 6.5% increase in clock cycles - I have to wonder if it really warrants the effort, cost, and potential warranty invalidation of performing it? (Unless you are doing it more for fun and education.) I am certain the performance increase would be much too suttle to be noticed in typical applications / games.

yea i think the performance increase will be too small for you to even feel.

I'm going to do it, but I'm going to wait a couple of weeks. I'll be sure to bench it with both. I need/want as much processing as I can get for certain applications.

...unless you start out with a 730 (1.6GHz).

Wait a couple months and get the 2.26ghz 780 :-)

You can upgrade your proc in the 9300? oh ..wow.. I didn't know that! I only got a 1.6 so if I can get a 2.0 for like $150.. That sounds like a nice upgrade!

Mine's for sale for $400. Maybe $350 if I don't get any takers on the first auction. Basically it's for sale for $50 less than the cheapest I can find it anywhere else. They're currently bottoming out at $465.

Personally, I'd be messing with the chipset so I could OC it before I ever change the CPU, you'll see much more gains. These P-M's run very cool so heat should not be an issue, just a matter of improving what's there stock (some Artic Silver), MB mod, and hopefully bios that will allow bumping of CPU & Memory voltages. One thing I don't see here (I am new to laptops) my Desktop MB (Abit NF7-S) has an incredible following, and dozens of customs bios are out there for it with more released all the time. (even though the stock Abit bios were 1000% more customizable than any Dell bios) It would be slick to see some re-working the Dell ones on the more popular units....

My desktop runs a almost 2yr old (paid $47 for it) AMD XP1700 (1.47Ghz stock) I run it at 2.1Ghz on air....a 600Mhz OC. It's been the family PC, runs all apps and games great. I know a P-M can do very well also.....

You took my thunder, I would also wait for the 2.26.

I'd wait and get the 2.1 when they release the 2.26 as that will drive the price down

I'll be getting the 2.26 if it were available. But I guess from the thread responses I'm the only one planning to do this. Cool, I like being unique.

Or perahps slightly obsessive/compulsive about getting the absolute maximum performance out of your i9300???

<joking>

Sorry buddy - couldn't resist!

what i think

Don't think BIOS will be an issue as the 9300 can be optioned with a 2.13 in certain parts of the world

I might look into that... Nice thread. BTW, what's a 2.0GHz P-M going for and where in Aus can I buy one?

Just wait for Yonah to be released, then the prices of the Dothan will SKYDIVE and a 2.26 GHz will cost like $50

Hmmm, I might just try overclocking the PM, while plugged in, which is when I want the power, plugged in at work. If I can over clock it stably to 25% more, I might forego the 2.13. What would that be like? A 2.5 PM? That should be near a P IV 4ghz or a 3.6 Athlon 64 (without the 64 of course). Do ya think? Here's to trying it. And hoping I don't burn it up in the process.

Just please document and take pictures of it all when you do it. Anatech shows the P-m as OCing well, and running quite cool while at it. I expect it will take hardware mods until someone gives us more options in the Bios.

130mhz isn't going to make a difference. The bus speed is what really gives you better speed, so look into overclocking.
