Ferrari 3200 ram, 1gb stick of pc2700 or 2x 512 pc3200?

Hi Folks,

Couldn't find this thread, though I am sure it has been asked a million times. My F3200 (now it sounds like a sports car!) still has 2x256 original pc 2700, but it has struggled on a few things (doom, v.jerky, O/C'd 1950mhz just for playing and graphics tweaked too 486/250) on lowest quality setting, still tends too freeze up once every hour or so.
I am wondering whether it is worth going to the expense of taking out both sticks, to replace with 3200, or just stick in 1 1024mb stick of 2700?

Any thoughts, also where to buy it.
The second question is performance vs price? I am not a massive gamer, I can see it needs it for doom ( and a faster hard drive, will wait for a reasonably priced 80gb 7200rpm...) but I will be doing a lot of photo editing with Adobe CS.
P.S. I also have DVD Idle so some extra ram will be usefull for that.

Snorre, just read again the review about performance increases dependent on amount of ram, well after 512mb, it seems all a bit academic, no?
P.P.S. If anyone has some 512mb sticks they would like to donate.......
(Based in England, but will buy in U.S. if they will ship...)

as for your question, extra ram could never hurt.

Extra ram makes a huge difference for HL2 and Doom3. I know, because I've upgraded. Even replacing one of the 256 sticks with a 512 (giving you 768mb) will make a difference. My friend couldn't afford the gig stick so he went for the 512. Check out our 3dMark scores in this thread:

Notice that there is no difference in our scores. The extra ram doesn't come into play unless the app needs it. In HL2's case, your computer will use between 650 - 850mb of ram (that including your system processes and the game). That's why the game will stutter even though the graphics card and handle it.
Also, the settings you're using on you 9700, 486/250 is not good for gaming. After about an hour you'll start to see artifacts and might be causing your game to freeze. I had mine clocked the same after reading Snorre's guide. Now I leave it at 465/236. At this setting, my computer has no problems running games for prolonged periods of time and I still get 60fps on any FPS with all the settings turned up except for Doom3.

I bought a 1gig stick of PC2700 from Newegg.com for 197.50 including shipping. I bought Kingmax. I couldn't justify the extra $ that they were charging for Corsair or Kingston and I've heard good things about Kingmax, so the choice was easy. You could also get 2x512mb of Corsair XMS PC3200 for about the same price. I just wanted more than 1gb of ram so that was out of the question.

Sorry for the long post, hope it helps.
