I currently have a Hitachi Travelstar 7K60 - 60 gig, 7200 RPM, 8 Meg cache. Is there anything else bigger? Seagate had a press release last year about the new 7200.1 drive with 100 gig capacity, but I haven't seen it shipping.

Their shipping the 5400 100GB drive, the 5400 Momentus, 7200 is slated for the end of this month.

Press Release

That's the one I saw - it's dated June 2004 and states that the drives will be shipping in the fall.

Too bad I never use more than 30 GBs

Yep, the end of March date is from ZDnet, damn if I can find the article again. They were dead on about the 5400RPM coming out.

Is there one released by Toshiba or someone with 16MB buffer on the 5400RPM version. Which equates to somewhere close to the 7200RPM HD?
All I can say is they better get on this, my 4200 is driving me insane!! And I know that if I crumble and buy a 7k60, they will finally have the 100GB a week later, with a $50 price drop on the 7k60, so lose lose either way... I hope that end of March thing is true, I would really love to get my hands on it before May.

ATA only,

SATA will be awhile yet because there just isn't a market for it yet, the SATA lappys just started selling 3-4 months ago and only higher end lappies at that.....

Yes there is, been out for awhile, as I bought one for my mom's laptop back when she got it a couple years ago. Recently put it in for her, thought I was going to use myself, as the 16 megs just was too tempting. It made a big difference for her, but then again she was using a 4200rpm.

Tellerve

edit2:
should note that they have an 80gig 5400rpm 16meg cache drive as well
