xps2 vs 9300 question. please look

will we be able to put a geforce go 6800 ultra in a 9300 just like we put a
mr 9800 in a 9100 and it wasnt supposed to fit?

or is there a fact known to everyone except me that says that it wont be possible?
No, it won't fit. They have separate cooling. Try doing a search next time as this has been posted many times.
we need sticky's for questions like this.
maybe some day.
Yes, sure it will work. The Ultra just has an extra cooling pipe that routes to the same cooling duct for the cpu. The case and everything else is the same. The cooling pipe will come with the gpu.

i see, so we have 2 no's and a yes, can i get more opinions? sorry about the fact that its been posted before, i was just in a rush cause i just learned about the 35% off on the 9300 and i just got frenzy since i had already ordered a xps2

well if the card can be put into the 9300 but theres soldering or something like that to do because of the cooling pipes, well, id be willing.

Its not suppoted as an upgrade.

However, if you are into tinkering I know some guys who got a V8 engine into a 1968 volkswagon bug. So anything is possible given the desire.

Just dont expect it to be under any kind of warenty.

Or a V8 Northstar engine in a Fiero.

well of course you guys will think that i say this because its what would be great for me, but consider that dell didnt want to sell the mr 9800 for the 9100, so we know that the 9300 and the xps are the same so maybe its just dell doing its marketing strategy so that you think you cant put the ultra in a 9300 so that you buy the more expensive xps2

Yes, this is exactly it. Same reason they don't offer the 2.13 Pentium M, just to create an apparent difference. Of course the 2.13 is supported on the 9300. Someone has said they use different motherboards. It's possible it, but it seams unlikely. I expect that initially this difference will be imposed, to promote the iXPS2, then will be removed to gather in as many sales for any setup as possible.

Well, if you can get the cooling system from whatever vendor you plan to purchas the 6800 Ultra from then it should not be too difficult. I imagine we will see some post around here before mid summer with people who have achieved such a feat. But at what cost? Are you willing to void your warenty AND pay $400+ (guessing here but 9800 was $399) more dollars IF you can get ahold of an Ultra?

Here is what the cooling system looks like:

Also Dell did promise "And graphisc Upgrade to XPS2 if one becomes available"
So eventually you will probably want to replace your 9300s Ultra with that card too.

Just curious, if it means that much to you, i would pony up the dollars now and get the XPS2 to be safe. Then again I like to play it safe, i am not a big gambler.

I'm SURE someone will try. I give them a 40% chance of success.

I would say it is not only possible but probable that the card fits into the XPS2. The only difference that will be in place is the mythical gigabit ethernet which in real world terms has debatable performance at best at this point. More than likely given that they have similar chassis and similar configs they will be able to use the Ultra card. That said, Dell DOES NOT have to offer the Ultra card ever to us and could simply deny access to it. And as someone posted earlier, I am not sure the premium of $300-400 is worth maybe a 20% gain in benchmarks or fps or whatever. From what I am gathering about the 9300 it will more than hold it's own and is worth every penny and then some. Plus the extra 1-1 1/2 of batery life is nice as well...

I was thinking in the shower. Instead of the 6800>6800U conversion being discussed, why not just get an XPS2 and do an XPS2>9300 plastics swap like what the 8600 people were doing to their machines a while back with the D800 shells. Basically, a 9300 with an Ultra is an XPS2, if you disregard the lights that myself and probably a number of others don't want and the GbE we won't use anytime soon. It's not really a price-concious solution, but I suspect it's far more practical than trying to put a 6800U in your 9300 at the moment.

Good point. Most likely I will not bother with it. This laptop will be good for three years. The last year or so it will get a little long in the tooth perhaps but it will still be a nice lappy. So I will probably stick with what is in it now. But it is fun to speculate isn't it? It definitely gets XPS2 owners in a tizzy somewhat, though I think they by and large are getting a HECK of a deal on their laptops. That and I don't think the 9300 will come seriously close to topping it. It is nice to be in the same league though

Why would you do a plastics swap? Just to get black trim instead of white? Paint!

I want the disco LEDs! (Which probably requires a controller that the 9300 mobo doesn't have.)

Agreed. It would be a pain in the ass. Well you told me in the "infamous" thread on the 9200 "Despite..." that the 9300 would be that sweet spot and it would seem you are a soothesayer....
If the 9300 does in fact come with DDR1 memory, would it be relatively easy to install a DDR3 module? I'm pretty sure this would void warranty though right?
The Graphic Memory is most likely soldered to the graphics module, making it nearly impossible to replace.
