heh well i was told by ALienware australia that mine was soposed to arrive on monday-tuesday. BUt, now they have said that it is going to arive before next weekend.

I hate alienware, i have paid 7,500$ NZ and they take forever to make a laptop. It doesn't take that long to put together a computer, i can put a high spec laptop together in a matter of 1-2 hours and have it shipped off to a customer.

But i can't get discounted prices anymore, so i can't make my own. So i am buying a 7700. But with all these known issue i am having second thoughts.

What known issues? ALL computers have issues, doesn't matter who makes them. I've owned many Dells and never had a problem. This is my 2nd AW laptop and so far so good. Just be a little patient and it will be all worth it

for the record, mine hasn't "overheated" and shutdown since that first time it happen on day 2 of my ownership of it. I played battlefield for 4 hours last night straight and again for 3 hours and no problems, ran fast as all get up as a matter of fact. So I'm pretty pleased with my decision to go with Alienware. I did the dead pixel test and I'm happy to report that my screen is flawless and dead pixel free. Now if I could fix this POS internal wireless-a card. I wish that guy that posted and said he tore apart a PCMCIA card and installed that internally would do a write-up on what he did, or at least elaborate a little on it.

Common problems for me:

1. left side is very hot... guess thats what you get from a PCIE Go6800 (anyone want to design an exhaust pipe mod?)

2. cpu fan chirping like everyone else... no I'm not gonna spray compressed air everytime I boot my machine, suspend/resume is a workaround, hoping for a BIOS fix from AW

3. the black strip of plastic where the power button and LEDs are is bubbling/peeling up, like it was never glued down completely

4. Intel HD Audio chip has terrible bass frequency, until installing a codec/driver from Realtek

And as an aside, isn't it about time laptops/notebooks came with builtin pads for resting your palms while typing? LOL

Otherwise... no dead pixels, screen is awesome!, gaming performance is great!

there is a fix for the high heat issue for the palmrest and gpu and cpu. but it means doing a simple mod that can void the warranty. The problem with the Gpu and palmrest is the very poor thermal pad between the GPU and heat sink. its thrmal properties are so poor the GPU gets pretty hot and the heat bleeds upwards and makes your palmrest hot. the simple fix is replace that thermal pad with some high performance thermal paste such as arctic silver 5. this lowers the GPU temp alot. so you get cooler gpu and palmrest. beware if you overclock after this mod you can still get a hot palmrest again. same goes for the CPU.

pull your keyboard and reseat the plastic piece, unless your talking about the top layer separating from the plastic.

Is there a howto written up on this?

i've had a problem with the modem. when i disconnect the connection tray hangs and then the machine won't shut down properly. i think it maybe a software issue though. anyone else have this problem?

also they didn't install alienautopsy correctly, it keeps looking for file that is nowhere to be found and i haven't had a response yet after two email requests. not a serious problem though but it'd be cool if it worked seeing as though i paid extra for it. otherwise the machine runs great

Count me in on the chirping fan brigade. Other than than it's an incredible machine. The chirping has to go though. It's real annoying and loud...
Hmmmpf.

1. Fan squeezes
2. Scratches from my clock and rubbing off the color from my Palm
3. internal (and external) Mic did not work

Seems to be that I have all 3 common problems with my 7700...
yeah the internal mic sucks, you have to be literally an inch from it for it to work. thats the only problem i see with mine, but no biggie since i have other mics...

ur mobo might b faulty like mine was
alienware will tell u that its just the ac adapter and send u new ones
tell them that u want 2 send ur comp on for them 2 check it out

i told them it was the mobo 2 and they said it couldnt possibly be the motherboard so i believed them

when i sent im my computer and the tech fixed it he said it was a faulty mobo =( 2 months of stupid alienware telling me it was the ac adapter and trying 2 send me new ones

and ya if u play games like bf2 for an hour or more at a time u will eventually have a dark palm looking mark were ur hand was
(oil from ur hand embedded in the case)

Rep points to you for the links. I have the chirp on my new Aurora. Its not terribly loud or annoying but its there. I knew I saw this discussed somewhere in the forums and you dropped it right in my lap. Now if I could just get a bios update.

See Alienware think about your security with the 7700 the palm print will help in recovering your laptop when it gets robbed.

are you sure it's not the clear protective flim that comes on it when it's new?
should just be a sticker. try peeling it off.

edit: heh heh, I got to start looking at the dates. this is old news. i think i need to smoke another one

My issues/fixes

- Low volume from internal mic / USB heaphone with inbuilt mic
- paint rubbing off below and above keyboard due to stoppers not extending far enough / a cut to size sheet of packing foam sheet material that I lay on the keyboard when closing lid
- heat / lapcool 2
- chirping fan / getthermal
- benchmark scores seem low / use extreme G driver

That's all I can think of ath the mo

For the internal mic problem you can try getting the latest driver. Open the Volume tray icon and go under microphone > advanced. There is a microphone boost option. Check that and it will help the internal mic (greatly in my case) and will help external mics as well. Make sure you have sound manager set to use the mic (the same jack is re-routed for surround sound).

That should help the microphone issue. Fans aren't a problem for me yet, but I've only had it 2 months. My paint is rubbing off due to the lid as well. I read somewhere that you can wax the paint like you do your car. I haven't done that (too busy playing games of course) but will soon. The foam padding sounds good too. I take this thing to school and got the bookbag. Between my folder for papers, text book and power adaptor and whatever else I carry, the laptop gets slightly compressed. No problems yet excpet, again, for the paint being rubbed off where the screen edge contacts the palm rest area.
