HP Pavillion ze4420us Boot Problems - No HP Logo to get into BIOS

My laptop has been giving me some problems over the last few days. This is a ze4420us and it will not boot correctly. All of the lights and fans come on, but nothing is displayed on the screen so that I can at least get into BIOS. I have turned this thing off and on about 100 times now and the HP logo came up one time, but I managed to miss F2 before it went on to the next screen and did not come back up the next time I rebooted. I have tried booting on the battery and on AC power, but it does the same thing. I have tried doing the boot block jumper and pressing Fn + B and then plugging in the power, but it never displays anything on the screen. Every once in a while it will power on for 2-3 seconds, reboot, power on for 2-3 seconds... it will do this 4-5 times, then all of the lights and fans will just stay on. Does anyone have any idea what else I can try? I wasted all evening talking to the idiots on HP's live chat. I talked to them for almost two hours and the final resolution was to just have me mail my laptop to them for $269.00 plus the cost of any part replaced! I would greatly appreciate any ideas!!!

Thanks!

Cpu

This is most likely the Athlon based board.. Try reseating the CPU first and blowing all of the dust out of the fan while youre in there.. These like to overheat the sockets and cause problems.. Worst case scenario is a systemboard replacement.

Well you were right on the money with the processor idea. I tried reseating it, but it didin't make a difference. With it powering on and off it really seemed like it was overheating, so I threw an old AMD athlon processor on the board and it powered right now with no problems. So now I need a new processor. I know the bad one was a 1.8 GHz, is there a way to find out the fastest processor I can put in there? All I can find on the interenet is that it comes with a 1.8... any ideas?

Thanks!

Ive seen these with a 2.8 but I'd stay lower.. The fan assemblys and heatsink unit is quite the pile on this model.. The faster the hotter.. We may have another 1.8 here if you need it. In all reality I'd run a 1.5 and apply arctic silver after removal of the tin transfer pad on the heatsink.. Also bend the 3 chrome hold down tabs up slightly to get a litle more pressure applied to the cpu from the heatsink. Just ensure even contact before firing up.

Ok, thanks for the information. The processor I have in it right now is a 1.5 and does have Artic Silver on there. I'll watch it for a few days and see how well it works.

Thanks again!

Mobmeter.. Down load and run it to see the temps.. If it gets above 80C shut it off. (Should never reach this and the cutoffs at 85 most likely)...
