what do you plan to do with it? travel? The only prob I see, is that it might be a bit of a hassle to travel with compared to the smaller versions, but the size is nice

yah travel from my couch to my bed

i don't go out much with my computers, but i do have a studio apt in manhattan, so no desk for me! - ok well desk but used by the server
post #4 of 25
ah then i'd think a 17 would be perfect for ya
post #5 of 25
I have the 17. I take it back and forth to work with me every day and I use it on my lap in bed most of the night.

Sometimes I wish I had gotten the 15 because the 17 can be a little unwieldy, but the 15 is only like an inch smaller on each side that I'd probably be thinking the same thing if I'd gotten one of them.

One thing I love is the screen...after using this one, I don't know if I could go to a smaller one.

the 12 in no dobt would be portable and easy to carry around, but man.... that small of a screen resolution?

yah, after using a tibook, then a 12" pb, now the 13.3" vaio. I can't see going back to anything less then 1280x800 or around there 15 would be OK.. but i still wish it was a bit higher in res. the 17 has more space... and ic ompared it.. it's about 2" wider than my vaio and an inch deeper, but no doubt feels like a monster!

considering the at 15 and 17 inch powerbook are almost the same spec, it is really down to you to choose what size is best for you.

if you travel a lot get a 15 inch powerbook, if your mainly going to use it as a desktop replacement and want a powerbook with amazing speakers get the 17 inch.

i suggest you go to a apple store and play around with both models before you make a choice.

If you want higher res, I'd wait a couple months to see if Apple's really going to start shipping HD PowerBooks, though I personally find 1440x900 quite comfortable.

1280x800 with normal windows fonts gets me squinting thru my glasses a bit, so i am starting to rething my thoughts on hihger res.. on that side the 17" gives teh res but with the size to accomodate it.

i am pretty convinced i want a 17" now i just wonder if the time is right to buy or wait for wwdc and see what drops.

1280x800 on what size screen?

Anyway, buy now and sell later if something better comes along. If you keep waiting for the next greatest thing you're going to be waiting for the rest of your life.

lol yah but i think i've had the sony for 3 months

that res is on a 13.3" screen..

with fonts to large it helps and i also realized, the screen is SOOOO bright i need to turn it down one bar and that greatly aids the squint factor.. it was just too bright for my midnight eyes.

Hi hooligan...

seriously the 17 is a wonderful machine in terms of screen size... and if you can afford it, it is a great buy to be sure!!

i have been reading alot around the web (particularly macnn.com and links given from it) and it seems that this recent speed bump and cost slash appears to be the last before the release of a g5 in a powerbook. Of course everything you read on the web is speculatiuon however there seems to be wisdom in it. all platforms are migrating to 64bit... amd has released it in the turion for laptops and in their desktops and intel will be releaseing it in the end of 2005 or early 2006. Apple already have a 64bit in the g5 for their desktops and i am sure they are feeling pressure to put one in a mobile box. its gotta come soon and that just seems like plain sense. any investment in a 32 bit platform is a waste of money as far as future proofing goes.

i for one wil not buy a 32 bit platform and i dont care how long i have to wait. buying and selling soon after you buy it is a waste of money.. you wil have to mark your price down soooooo much to get it to sell once it is outdated and to have it for only a short time just donmt make any sense unless you are a very wealthy... but even the wealthy dont splurge their money.. thats why they are wealthy!

even if the next release is not a g5, waiting wil only serve make the product cheaper than it is now lol and maybe flaws wil be ironed out like the trackpad issues will be fixed eventually.

cheers,
rob.

You do realise, Phoenix, that 32 bit will be supported for a very long time to come. I doubt we'll ever see 64 bit only software and operating systems before the end of a decade. 32 bit has too high of an installed base for it to happen. If you buy 32 bit now you will be set for several years yet to come.

so Kakaze, what exactly is it like having 17 inches in bed? sorry, had to.

i have decided to wait on my pb purchase. The sony IS a great machine, i just hate windows. That said for me personally it seems that a pb purchase right now with tiger coming, 64 bit push, hd push.. just too much to go with a pb now. I don't think w'll be waiting another 9 months for a new pb, but the apple page does still call them new. By the time that WWDC hit sthe PB will be 6 months into life just about, so it doesn't seem unlikely to expect an update with them. On that note i'll wait. If they release another g4 rev at that point, then i am LOCKED into wintel until the g5 comes... so it's a gamble, but one with which I will have to live.

I don't know how to reply to that without being vulgar, Tria

And, seriously h00ligan...don't wait for 64 bit. Maybe wait for Tiger if you don't want to pay 160 bucks for a copy of it, but otherwise, 32 bit will serve you fine for a while. Any PowerBook is going to have the lower speed G5s in it at first, and they're not too much faster than G4s. A 17 inch PB gets around 130 in XBench, and a 17inch iMac gets around 160, so it's not that much of a jump.

And as far as a G5 PB goes...you don't want to buy a first revision anyway since it's most likely going to have problems up the wazoo, which means you're going to be waiting even longer for a second revision.

sad how people think they have to change hardware just to get new software :-\

by god abf, that actually wasn't half bad. guys! anyone got a camera? this is like the 1st time in a while i haven't had to get pissy w/ abf about some hairbrained comment.

but seriously, it seems abf, that your complaint will be remedied in the next 2 yrs given the emphasis on virtualization efforts from intel and AMD.

There are many advantages to having 64 bit vs 32 bit.

http://www.build-your-own-computer-t...rocessors.html

I dont want to hijak this thread and turn it into a 32 vs 64 issue.. but i believe it has merit in adresing the initial post because we are at a point where cpu tech is shifting between the two and it 'may' be sooner than later.

As you can see from reading the info in this link there are many benefits of the 64 bit platform. the 64 bit platform is also backwards compatible with 32 bit.

64 bit is an investment to the future. yes 32 bit will be around for some time however you wont have to change your hardware as 64 bit starts to become more mainstream. Designers wont stop forging ahead with technology and before you kow it 64 bit will be the in thing and software will be designed to be optimised for 64 bit.

I have just read that ARIMA released a turion laptop... so when the benchmarks come out then we can see the comparisons between the 32 bit and the 64 bit architectures.

For me, i am not one to keep upgrading my hardware too often.. i have better things to spend money on lol.. so when i buy, i buy the best at that time so i can keep it for as long as possible. and i believe the 64 bit is the best answer to what im looking for.

However, if you dont mind upgrading your stuff regular then that is fine.. it wont matter what you buy because you will always be at the front of technology.

anyway lol... thats my 2c worth

cheers.
