Any reason NOT to reformat? - Page 2

let me put it to you like this...

if you are anything but a newbie, you should reformat/reinstall (if you have a copy of windows ).

if you are a newbie, you should also do a reformat/reinstall. a. you could use the practice and perhaps graduate to a non-newbie, b. your computer will be MUCH more efficient with a fresh install of windows, and c. if you screw up, you can just put in the dell recovery disk and get back to where you started.

also, i would leave the 47mb diagnostic partition, just because it is easier to work with dell if something happened. if not, you can always boot to the diagnostics from the driver cd.

Yah, hard drive space isn't what it used to be. I figure eventually i'll need an external to tote around, cuz 80gb is going to go fast. I wanna find something light though... hmmm

formatting the hard drive damages it that's all

Is it just me or did dell stop giving a driver cd with new systems? Because after I recieved my I6000, there were only 3 application cds and a windows Home edition cd. After i reformated everything, i was looking for the driver cd and found none. As problems began to accumlate, i just decided to return the I6000 and get a I9300

Give the Maxtor One-Touch II (not the original One-Touch 0 the newer one) a look if you want an external HD. I looked around quite a bit before buying one. It comes with a descent backup utility, it can be configured to automaticlly spin-down when not in use, runs at 7200 RPM with 16 MB buffer, and it looks pretty slick.

I wouldn't format her computer. What does she do on it that the extra speed really helps? If nothing, then just leave it alone. When she contacts Dell for tech support, it'll be good to have Dell software and the recovery on the HDD so they can walk her through it. Unless you plan on doing all the tech support.
