Returning 700m. I just cant handle that keyboard.

As hyped as I was to get the 700m, now that its here im disappointed. I read every review out there, looked at it at a dell store once and waited forever for the right price. But even after all that then im just about ready to give it up bcause of a few problems that turned out bigger than i thought they would be.

-The keyboard-
That keyboard really is the main flaw on this machine. 90% the size of regular keyboards is small but workable IF the keyboard is layed out properly. I used an averatec and sony just fine and those had small keyboards, but this dell one is pretty bad. Why would they halfsize the period? Im always blazing through a sentence and once it comes to the period i either use a "/" by accident or have to lift my hand completely to see where the heck the period is.

Plus, shrinking the keyboard wasnt necessary. This is a widescreen notebook and they allowed about an inch on both sides of the keyboard. Why not let a fullsize keyboard stretch all the way across like they do with the 12" mac laptops?

-Screen-
I like Brightview but i can easily see how it could be considered annoying./ Outdoors then i see my reflection more than i see the screen. Its not bad though so i dont mind it. But what bothers me is the native 1280x800 resolution. I use 12x8 on my other laptop and desktop monitor and love it. but on a 12 inch screen its a tad too small. I have perfect vision but when i use this thing then im noticing im starting to lean into the screen when looking at icons or whatever. 12" is nice but i think for me 13" is the sweetspot for small widescreen.

-Battery/Weight-
I got the extended battery because everyone says you have to. Its great but the way it pushes out is just ugly. I bought this thing because i wanted to replace my 15" notebook with a smaller one. But with that battery installed then the thing isnt that much smaller than my old notebook.

Plus my old notebook was 6.2lbs and this with the battery is 5lbs. When i originally decided on the 700m i was thinking 4lb 700m vs my current 6lb notebook. It seemed like a huge weight difference. but now i upgraded that battery and with the added weight its a 5lb 700m vs my6lb system. The difference isnt that apparent anymore.

Anyway, im pretty sad that this didnt work out for me. So im going to dump it. Im hoping that a replacement to the 700m gets announced soon and they fix the problems. Every other complaint is just me being nitpicky, but that keyboard is the real issue i have and the primary reason im returning this.

Well, I don't have any issues with either the screen or the keyboard, but to each his own, I suppose.

agreed hotstuff2, took me a few days to get used to it, now I'm fine

the ONLY thing I would change is for PGup and PGdown, they should be on the up down arrow rather than the left and right

The 700m was a dissapointment to me also, so I replaced it with a latitude C400, one of their older models. The brightview especially annoyed me because the majority of the work I do is outside. The C400 has a readable display outside because it does not have the gloss.

Also its kind of weird that the 700m isn't very flat on the bottom. In some places it seemed to be 1.5" think, which is sad for a subnotebook.

The 6-cell battery on the C400 doesn't hang out the front, side, bottom, back, etc.. so I can have a little over 4 hours life, and it doesn't change the computer footprint, or the weight of the machine.

I think the 700m is much more plasticky now that I have a latitude. The chassis would creak as I picked the machine up, the back of the lcd would bend if I picked it up from there, and the battery never felt like it was totally secured by the clip..

I hope they don't ditch the D400 type of machine and replace it with a converted version of the 700m. That model is hardly a business machine!

Eh, what really annoys me about that is having to hold the Fn key down! But it's livable with.

sorry to hear, but if it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit...the weight is 4.5 lbs with extended battery...at least on my scale

i use 1280x800 on my 700m but use lower on my larger LCD at home...and i always find myself leaning forward to look at the desktop LCD

people are different...oh well

i use my lappie 98% of the time, so my problem is going to the full size keyboard on my desktop..i type over 100wpm..but even though i'm use to the 90% keyboard, since it is shifted a little left of center, i have a problem of hitting 0 instead of -

i dont have issues with any of the things mentioned by the poster. In the beginning I hated the keyboard equally as much as you. I initially had problem with the half sized period key just as you mentioned, and I also had a problem with tiny shift key because I kept on pressing the up arrow key by mistake. But it has been a little over three weeks now since I've had this thing and I'm now 100% used to it and I can type just as fast as any other full sized keyboards with my eyes closed. no exageration. Also i love the screen because I usually use it indoors and I love the 16:9 resolution. If I lose this laptop or get it stolen, I would buy it AGAIN within a heartbeat. But hey, whatever floats your boat

And 50% more likely to get carpal tunnel syndrome. Enjoy!

I disagree. Carpal Tunnel syndrome comes from how you hold your wrists while you're typing. Provided you hold them correctly, you're at no greater risk than anyone else.

I've typed on the 700m for a few hours straight and feel no pain. And I spend a good 15 hours a day typing on keyboards.

it'll be much easier when i can use a bluetooth adapter to connect wireless devices to the 700m

Original Poster here. Im giving this thing more time and i do admit that my non-keyboard complaints were just frustration stemming from my keyboard issues. Right now im getting much much better at typing on a 90% keyboard, but my speed has slowed down considerably. And its all because of the period and slash keys. i shifted my right hand over a few mm to get a more natural speed but its just rediculous that we have to do these adjustments just to type semi comfortably.

Anyway, im going to give htis another week so i can make a decision. i love the thing so im giving it a chance.

took me about a week to get used to it and 2 weeks after to get my speed back up.

however when i type on the big keyboards i messup now, hahaha

Yeah the . and / key are the things you need to get adjusted to and I got adjusted to them after around a week.
