I did something....

I was at at skool and had meh lappy with me, during class we take intermittent brakes. Anyway, we took a fifteen minute brake; after that I put meh lappy on stand by. Class ended early so I put it back in its back pack and went home, forgot it was in standby and went to sleep. Next morning open the backpack up, take it out, and realize its still in stand by...

Loads up right where I left off! and only used about 5% of the battery for 12 hrs in standby... I love that! No booting up, no stupid windows startup....
any way is this bad for meh lappy or will it hurt the hdd later on or what? I don't want to fudge it up...

No, it won't hurt your laptop....but you may kill your grammar teacher (or drive him/her insane) if you continue to write like that.

iirc, sleep state turns off your hd (if it's not off completely, it's a *very low* power state).

5% for a day on StandBy is pretty normal, AFAIK. I believe it basically moves everything from memory to the hard drive so that it can cut power to the RAM among many other components. When you resume it (bring it out of StandBy), it moves everything back from the hard drive to the RAM and initializes the other hardware that was [partially] shutdown without having to boot up the OS.

That's hibernation. Standby retains everything you had open before you went into standby in RAM. Hibernation writes it to the HDD.

Yeah, what I was going to say. I also personally prefer Hibernation over Standby because the system is off and there is no chance of me losing data and in addition I wont be losing even 5% of battery.

It's the little things that make people happy.
