**9300** DISPLAY Questions.......... - Page 2

Somebody posted frame rates for HL2 at 1920x1200 at the very conservative stock clocking of the go6800 in the 9300: around 36FPS. In other words, I wouldn't worry about the go6800 not having enough oomph to push pixels at native WUXGA rez.

Higher resolutions will just tax the card more.....
The point to owning a nicer card is that it can be played at higher resolutions with eye candy on. If not, people wouldn't buy top end video cards. I chose the WUXGA for that reason. I find the sweet spot on a lot of games I like to be about 1280X1024. This is not an option for WXGA (1440X900). The best you can hope for is 1024X768 with WXGA really, and that just isn't going to cut it for me. Hey, I may not be the best gamer in the world, but I like all the eye candy on as I die and respawn thank you very much...

But then wouldn't 1440X900 be a sweeter spot/compromise than 1280X1024?.....

The NVidia video cards haven't had scaling limitations that ATI has had. I don't know if the newer ATI PCI-e boards are the same, but according to the Dell Video & LCD FAQ here, all the previous ones did. When I've compared screens rezed down in the past, it seems the NVidia based machines were less blurry than ATI, and using the sharpening adjustment a little helps reduce that even further.

I only ordered 512 dual channel with my 9300 and 256 geforce 6800. I dont plan to have multiple apps. running so that should be enough for HL2 right?

If you use your laptop in a docking station with external keyboard (thus it is further away) 50+ hours per week then 144 dpi is not insane. I have perfect vision but it is all about personal preference. The vast majority of computer users throughout the world are still using 800 * 600 or 768 * 1024.

Distortion of webpages and applications (when straying from 96 dpi) can be a big deal - it depends upon which websites and applications you use on a daily basis. To be honest it bugs me that we have to put up with ANY distortion when using an otherwise extrordianry notebook.
