Aliens aducted the military, reviews on 5500 and 7700

A naval enlisted personnel’s take on the 5500 series:

I came to this site the day I ordered my 5500, knowing it would be an extremely long wait due to APO/FPO shipping. I have at home an ALX so I knew what to expect from alienware. And so it began, the wait.

Waiting - The wait wasn't something to complain about, did you expect them to build YOUR computer that day you ordered it and ship it the same night, with over night shipping so it would be at your door at 5am? If you did, you can do my online shopping next time. A month to bill, process, build and ship seems long compared to other laptop companies. My friend bought a great laptop from ibuypowerpc.com 2 weeks after I ordered mine, and he got his a few a weeks before I got mine. Did I cry and say that’s not fair and ask him if I could use his laptop until I got mine? Yes.

The damn thing came - I got the box from mail call and took it straight to my rack (bed for you civs). And began to rip the box apart, forget the sentimental feelings and awe, I want to play doom. The packing was great, was pretty hard to get the thing out of the box, which indicates they might have put some effort into the packaging, or they ran out of the right size boxes, but it makes me feel better thinking they care.

Cowboy up - I booted up the system and did my own tests, regardless of whatever company says to me, I do my own tests, and the system ran fine. I began the hours upon hours of installing my games, screenshot located in here of the current games I have installed. Keep in mind most of them are multi-player oriented, we are stuck on a ship for months at a time, lan parties are big.

My stuff added on and stuff - I threw in my sony memory card from my sony cyber shot 5.0mp into the 3-in-1 SD slot and it worked without a hitch, then I plugged in my laptop cell phone I bought from this Italian cell phone company so I can get the internet on my computer, (note, this is not wireless, its cellular so don’t ask how it works with 802.11). And that worked too, now I can chat and play games and download and all the other stuff that makes a computer get all jacked up.

Final Verdict - don’t buy the 5500 laptop, because if you do, and I meet you, it will make my 5500 look less cool, and that just isn’t allowed.

Now, the 7700 series (yea, us navy boys waste money on stuff we don’t need, such as alienware laptops).

Waiting - This is where things got interesting, I ordered the 7700 and it came a month later, moving on.

The damn thing came - Once again, it came through mail call and I opened it up, but this time I took pictures, I had random guys hold it for me as I made it feel like a porn star.

Cowboy up - Once again I did my own tests, and same results, system worked fine. The 256mb card is totally awesome, might I add.

Final Verdict - Get a voodoo envy for 5,000 so I can laugh at you.

Extras: the backpack came with the 5500; it’s awesome, durable and looks elite. It makes me feel like im some delta force covert ops guy with my whiley-x ballistic sunglasses (military sunglasses). or that could be because they give us m16s and stuff dailey, but I would like to think alienware has something to do with that.

About the pictures:

Not many people ever been on a naval ship so I would like to take this time to explain most of the pictures to the best of my ability without giving you information that is actually useful.

File: 5500_closed.jpg
Description: the 5500 closed.

File: 5500_games.jpg
Description: the games I have installed on my 5500 (and 7700).

File: 5500_open.jpg
Description: my 5500 open on the mess decks, they were not secure at this time (inside naval joke if any vets are here). For civs, a mess deck is where the crew eats while underway.

File: 7700_closed.jpg
Description: here is the 7700 closed in the hands of a sailor. he dosnt seem happy because its not his.

File: 7700_open.jpg
Description: same deal, but its open this time. Behind him is a sailor playing command and conquer generals.

File: alienware_box.jpg
Description: Sailor holding a big alienware box holding the 7700. And many other sailors behind him act "cool". note one of them is also on a laptop, he was currently playing Command and Conquer: Generals Zero Hour. And to the right of the box are our beds, 3 stacked high.

File: alienware_box2.jpg
Description: here is a sailor holding my box containing the 7700. Behind him is a sailor playing command and conquer generals.

File: alienware_box3.jpg
Description: the box has been opened; still he is playing command and conquer generals, im sure by now he has nuked someone.

File: backpack.jpg
Description: here is the backpack that came with the 5500 laptop. It is an awesome bag for any laptop or anything to carry. I keep my iPod mini, 5500, small cd case with games, and wireless router in it just fine. under this bag is my large dvd collection. Since we have nothing else to do but play games and watch movies....

File: laptop_cell.jpg
Description: this is the cool laptop cell I bought in Italy, it hooks up via usb 2.0 and allows me to get a cellular signal to my computer, acting as a modem so I can go online wherever there is a cellular signal.

Now that is one killer review from the USN point of view. President Reagan is turning over in his grave, well maybe not, he was big on upping the technology of the military, specially the Navy! Your AW's must be the envy of all on board!

I got out with a DD214 after six long years (1985)...I remember only the good times...Like Sonar had the only PC (laptop was not a word yet)...an XT intended to calculate the salinity etc. of the ocean. The software didn't work, we continued with the long drawn out calculations by hand...and used the PC to play a jacked up DOS (of course) "adventure" game. We also had a "Centipede" arcade console on board.

Oh the "good" memories...

Death3D,
Just out of interest did the postmark on your box match the shipping date they gave you? My APO box and the customs form were postmarked two weeks after the ship date they game me by e-mail and in the phase game. Could never find out what it was doing during those two weeks.

actually same prob here, im FPO AE, so its overseas armed servies (europe). the 2 weeks is where the PC (postal clerk), take over and distribute your packages to the correct APO/FPO. if your doing a lot of online shopping el mohandess, and are in the serive, check out www.shipitapo.com, a few ex-army guys run the site, they are stationed in phili, their busniess is to make shipping apo/fpo a lot faster. i use it a lot on stuff that says "Cant ship apo/fpo" such as apple ipod.....i got mine though...damn terrorists.

thanks everyone for the compliments on review, ill make some more when i buy more stuff =]

i plan on buying a SFF or the media box when i get back to home port for my house and wife.

i just found it funny to comment on this great post. my rate in the navy is AW(A)....kind of funny, Alienware could be shortened to AW, my rate, Ariel warfare, AW...now if you dont find that funny the terrorists have already won....anyways, i called up alienware and asked them if they got any aliens in the neighborhood (im not joking, we hit port and i called the support number), and they said we have no idea what your talking about, so i said roger and came online....i didnt know if anyone out right asked them if they knew aliens, so i thought id give it a try.

Is the guy holding the 7700 really small or is the laptop really that big? Looks like he could use that in place of a bullet proof vest

The best thing about that Navy is the semen in white bell-bottom pants

home?

im still deployed overseas, thats why it was sent fpo...

and i have worked with the marines, considering they are a branch of the navy.

Hey, great review really enjoyed the pics. I work with lots of ex Navy, my company (FPL) loves hiring 'em. The submariners are a little different

I also know the real reason we're kicking everyones butt is because you young guys with your video game skill are operating real weapons systems with the skill needed to do 'em justice - FRAG 'EM ALL and let GOD sort it out

Hey I'll echo the sentiments of everyone I work with and know, glad you guys are out there and come home safe.

If I was in charge you'd all have a new AW lappy or the toy of your choice, of course knowing those guys that hot bunk their toy choices might be interesting. I'd put Darth in charge of that department.

Wow, I didn't know that you could deploy to Italy. I know you could get stationed there, but deploying? Now Iraq, that's a deployment for you.
