mcafee tried that at start, then become a commercial software because of cost factor.
AVG antivirus is actually BETTER than all the commercial solutions out there for a variety of reasons. Maximum PC has reviewed it on several occasions, and each time it comes out ahead. It detected all the same test viruses, scanned machines just as fast, had LESS advertisements (AVG has none, McAfee is advertisement-laden), and is still FREE.
AVG works like this because it has a free version and a commercial version. There IS a commercial product behind the frequent (And I do mean very frequent) virus definition updates, but we get the benefit of it FOR FREE. This is because AVG makes their money mostly on businesses; the free version is only for personal use. Also the server version costs money. Maximum PC did a roundup. The usual suspects were there, PC-Cillin, McAfee, Norton Antivirus, AVG, etc. AVG Free edition WON.
In fact, AVG won a "softie" award from Maximum PC this year. These are their annual awards for BEST software on the market.
