it's a lo-jack prevention device for your system. most laptops developed in that past 5 years have come standard with the standard lock adapter built into in the case. just latch it to the case and wrap the cable around the leg of the desk on which the system rests.

I think you mean "the club" prevention device. Lo-Jack is an electronic tracking system that locates one's stolen vehicle, whereas the club is something a thief must spend a few seconds on to disable prior to stealing the vehicle... like the Kensington lock (a couple seconds tops and it's defeated).
Really depends on your situation. For a little extra peace of mind while you're not in your dorm room or whatever I'd spring for one, I suppose. If anyone really wants to steal your laptop though a little steel cable plugged in to your laptop isn't going to do anything... You're pretty much just stopping thieves of opportunity.
