New 7,200 RPM 100 mb hard drives?

Does anyone know for certain when the reported 7,200 RPM 100 GB hard drives will arrive on the scene? I've heard the end of this month. I want to order a new Dell Precision mobile M70, but without the option of dual 7,200 hard drives available, I would wait if the wait isn't too long.

they are going to oem notebook mfgs first, then retail. Should be available soon from an oem like Dell, retail versions will probably be in May or June.

ha ha. That's not funny. I remember when my IBM ps1 came with a 30Mb hard drive back in the early 90s, and that was big for those days.

yeah, right look at how many answers...no one knows for sure...they'll arrive when they arrive. GOD, if you don't know, just admit you don't know!!!!! ;o)

<---doesn't know

they will probably be cheaper aftermarket than from dell anyway...

yeah, you gotta either get them when they are doing new product promotion or wait a couple months for the hype to die down a little

I'm in the situation that I need this for my company, which is money. I can save a few hundred bucks now and wait until the hype dies down or I, literally, can lose thousands in lost contracts by not buying now and providing my client with the 3d renderings he needs for visualization.

To compund my problem, I just spoke with Intel regarding the performance of the P4 vs. PM and was advised that, hopefully within a month, Intel will release their new line of P4 mobile processors with the Centrino technology.

So, by some accounts, April may bring to us the powerful P4 Centrino processors and 7,200 RPM 100G hard drives. Can life really be so sweet to those who wait, or am I just too hopeful?

don't know more about your situation, but it is dangerous to hedge capital purchases based off of projected releases of new computer technologies...there are always inevitable delays and there is gonna always be something sexier around the corner, and there will be associated press release hype saying next quarter this and that...bottom line is, if your company needs it now, then you have to get it now.

i think you are basing judgement off of camelot theory..life ain't so sweet, you are just being hopeful.

bottom line is, if you haven't set a drop dead date, then you need to set one. your opening statements were a little confusing, but look, you can always get 7200rpm HDs later and perhaps negotiate with the seller on upgrading to the larger 7200rpm drives. also, i do not like taking performance advice from the manufacturer, as they have a vested interest in marketing their products. although they may say their new line of P4M's w/C are better, in real world application it may not be the case (i.e. i remember the P4 hype but in office applications it was slower). Moreover, it will take some time for computer companies to adjust create bios etc that can fully exploit the new technology.

I'm thinking Seagate doesn't even know, since they said they'd release back in Nov. 2004.
yeah, i've also read many releases about wireless g with bluetooth mini pci cards that didn't come to fruition either...

i'm in no danger of running out of HD space for what I do, but it would sure be nice when seagate gets its act together so i can spend some freakin money

it is odd that only one company (hitachi) has produced a 7200rpm drive thus far...and haven't read any news releases on other companies producing 7200rpm drive to compete with seagate if the thing ever comes out.

What's this about? Anyone have any links.

Toshiba also has a 50GB 2.5" 7200rpm drive. Its the MK5024GAY if I remember correctly.
my bad...but it's amazing that it doesn't seem that there is a rush to get large 7200rpm 2.5" drives out there...plus OUCH $250 for 50GB vs. $150 for 7k60 60GB

laffingbilly;
It's not that I'm hedging capital purchases. I can put off the purchase 4-6 weeks and get by. I am on my third Dell Inspiron over the past 6 years and in each case discovered the series was discontinued within a few months after purchase. I understand technology and that's life and so on and, at $3,000 per laptop, can deal with it.

However, I'm committed to spend $5,500 - $6,500 for a high powered workstation and would prefer to stay with Dell. Dells' M-70 cannot be configured with dual 60G 7,200 RPM drives, nor the P4, and they have started pulling all their notebooks off the P4 processor.

The people I know who use the software I do, tell me to stay with P4. Dell says PM, because that is what they are selling. BOXX, EUROCOM, HYPERSONIC (all using the Clevo unit) say P4 because that's what they are selling. Hence my call to INTEL today. They say P4, even if I purchase today. If heat becomes an issue, and it will running 3d rendering 10 - 12 hours a day, they advise me to use third party devices to add cooling under the unit. However, they told me that they are close to releasing the P4 Centrino.

With Dell I am also limited to a 60G hard drive, if I want 7,200 RPM. With individual file sizes in REVIT of 10 - 30 MB, 60G will not last. Hence my question if anyone heard recently about the release date for the 100MB 7,200RPM hard drives.

dude, i hear you...i purchase some as well and were discontinued within 6 months...it's hard to guage what models are going to be good sellers enough to keep them.

from what i know, the pentium M processor with 855 chipset is faster than the P4 and with Dothan, I would say it will even better with a better graphics card

don't know what a P4 w/centrino is. unless they mean the Dothan

don't get caught on the centrino portion, b/c that is just gimmicky. to be centrino it needs to have Pentium M, 855/915 chipset, and intel wireless card.

if you are gonna stick with dell, i'd be looking at P-M (Dothan), 256 graphics, and maxing out on the RAM, with that you can always get two 60GB 7200rpm drives...the M70 accepts one primary and one modular bay...don't know if the modular bay will accept larger than 40GB though, i don't see why it wouldn't...if it does, you can always buy an extra 60GB 7200rpm drive and put it in the caddy for the modular bay. or just get a larger 5400rpm 8MB for the time being with the maxed out ram until the 100GB 7200rpm comes out.

giving the example of seagate release, it was last summer i believe and they kept pushing it saying next quarter...so if that tells you anything about whatever the p4 centrino is coming out, then i would say there is gonna be a long wait...look at the delay for Dothan to be released.
i want a 100gb 7200 drive asap, i hope they are released soon. it's a shame they will probably cost a arm and a leg, but will be worth it. i heard they are to be released at the end of the first quarter, which is now!!! it'll be nice.........
Here's what seagate told me today about when the 100GB 7200rpm (Momentus 7200.1) will be out: "Hopefully, this model of hard drive should become available within the next 5 months."

operative word "hopefully"

That is just a little over 1 year from the press release...so, that just goes to show you, never believe in the hype over press releases re: tech stuff...there are inevitable delays. you can always delay your tech purchases for what is suppose to come out, but that is a fruitless pursuit because there will always be something around the corner.
