Sony support - worth the risk?

post #1 of 6

Hi, I am headed off to college in the fall but would like to go ahead and purchase a laptop. My main concerns are portability and battery life. I will be carrying the laptop every day and it will travel with me on an airplane about every six weeks. I have explored every option, including Apple, and am still open to all suggestions. However, I have basically narrowed it down to the Sony S-series (probably 360) because of the weight and battery life, decent specs and style. (I have been thinking nonstop about the decision for a month and I really just needed to choose something, it was driving me crazy.) My budget is $2000.

Now, for my question. Is the risk of Sony's supposedly horrible support worth it? I will be purchasing the 2 Year Onsite Service Plan plus Accidental Damage Protection for Notebooks. Does this put me in the free-and-clear, support wise? Should I NOT buy from Sony directly?

Also, if anyone has another suggestion for me, that would be great too. I am not set on this computer. I was highly debating between Fujitsu and Sony but I read that Fujitsu's screens were somewhat bad, and that Fujitsus are terrible for gaming. I am not in any way a heavy gamer but I do occasionally play Ragnarok Online and a few others, and would like to leave the gaming option open just in case.

Thanks =)

Hi,

I have a Sony and I will never buy another one. Their customer service is awful. No one spoke comprehensible english and I spoke to four different individuals. Plus they weren't able to solve my problem after charging me for the call. They merely told me that I'd have to send it to sony, at my cost. Instead I found a place near me and had them fix it for much cheaper.

Btw, it was a loose wire inside that happened in SONY's factory. So it was of no fault of my own.

I'm now looking for a new laptop because mine stinks, and its only a few years old.

My advice is rethink Sony. Its just not worth the hassle. Their computers are way overrated.

If you are looking at the support angle of things Im sad to say that Sony still sux. If you are needing teh support side of things and dont really need the video card (which is seriously all i bought the sony 360 for) look a the HP DV 1000 series. they are roughly the same size and Compaq does have a better support staff. Or the dell 600m is the equivelent if you like dell and i would recommend dell for their support any day of the week.

Note Im not bashing the product just their customer support.

i dunno... i haven't had any problems yet, touch wood. I also wouldn't buy an extended sony warranty,if you are going to put money into extended support i'd say it would be better to go with circuit city, imho.
