Do you think they would have to replace the chasis on the 5670 if I were to send in a

i agree with you too....cmon...WHERE ARE THE 5xxx People out there that need upgrades!!!!!!!!!!

I talked to a Sager rep this afternoon about a swap for a 3.06 HT chip for a 3.0 HT chip so that the chip can take advantage of the new FSB. Unfortunately, they're not allowing a swap of one chip for the other or trade in value toward the old chip.

So for $1,000 you can take advantage of the new ram, a new video processor, hardware raid and a new keyboard. I'm a bit disappointed.

Thanks for checking that out. It's not the end of the world, but more food for thought. If you get your unit sent back, you're only out the shipping. I guess I'll think about it a bit longer. I'm on vacation next week so it was a good time to send it in, but in my case I was breaking up a painted and already very powerful unit. I'm certainly not disappointed with the current performance. The 8890s have even MORE bells and whistles, but would I really utilize it, or just have it as a nice-to-have. I'll probably think on it s'more. Love these forums. There's more communication and exchange of learning than most places. (Now if only the U.S. and U.N would listen to us. ... Nevermind.) Thanks again.

I haven't run into this yet because this (5680) will be my first Sager. My intention is to upgrade every other new model so the $$$ hit won't be so bad. I'm sure this notebook will still be pretty good a year from now. The one I have now (Dell 8100) is still pretty usable for what I do (high-end solid modeling, FEA). Fortunately it's not my main comp, but I use it a lot when showing clients my models and/or results. Maybe it will be worth it more when the M11 comes out with more goodies (faster better proc, FSB, HD, LCD, etc.) Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Well the mobo comes with the vid card you cant choose not to get the new vid or new mobo anyway I beleive... the vid card is integrated on the mobo..

i think i would rather upgrade since i dont think i could use anything less than 1600x1200 and i love the UXGA screen. if the 8890 came with a UXGA screen then maybe it wouldnt make sense to upgrade.

If your gonna upgrade...just curious...what your reason?

Better gaming? which games?

Speed up apps? ie:video/audio/3D editing-which apps?

Bragging rights?

Money to burn?

Nothin else to do?

ARGGGHHH!! Just re-read this. The MEMORY slows down too! My 8887 is all packed and sitting in the car for a trip to the shipper's. I REALLY wish these upgrade paths were better explained and organized. Most people who hang out with Sagers and these forums are fairly computer savvy, but I for one am not (until now) intimate with bus speeds, cpu architecture, chipset architecture, and the effects of one on the other. It would be nice if the upgrade info had said IF you upgrade an 8887, you CANNOT upgrade the processor and CANNOT take advantage of the 800FSB, and IF you upgrade the RAM you CANNOT take advantage of the DDR400. (It would be REALLY nice if they would just offer the 3.2ghz CPU along with this and make it a fully functional upgrade.)

So I'm easy. Somebody please talk me into still going to the shipper's, and thanks for your patience with the little people.

Whoa!!! Calm down bro! here is the dealy. They will still put the good, 400mhz ram in (its what ur paying for). The CPUs are not soildered in (at least they shouldnt be, and if i am wrong guys, say so!). When you save up some more $, you can change the CPU urself. When u do that, then u will have a full 5680. The drop in speed is never permenent, and can always be fixed. So, if you put a 800Mhz FSB CPU in, your at full speed, and life is peachy.

For simplicity, if you can afford it, i would have them upgrade the cpu too. Makes it easier in general for ya. But, if you wait, i have no doubts you can get help from users here.

Babba's post in this thread said they wouldn't allow a swap or trade-in of CPU. I read\mis-read that to mean they weren't offering the 3.2 chip at all. I'll call them myself. (My first call, the guy hadn't even heard of 8887 upgrades.) If I understand laptop CPUs (and I probably don't) I'd prefer not to go through the layering and pasting of the CPU covers. It's just a bit more DIY than I care for, though I've disassembled desktops before. Thanks for your quick response.

I would keep the 8887 or sell it and then get a brand new sager of your choice. You'll make someone else happy and end up with the new laptop for a lot less $$$ overhead than you think...

Think about it...email me for the economics...I have it worked out...

according to pricewatch a new 3.0ghz 800mhz FSB is $380; a new 3.06ghz, 533mhz FSB is $369. If you could find somone interrested in a perfectly good 3.06ghz for $280 (which would be a good deal for them) you could sell your old cpu and upgrade to the 800mhz FSB.

Hey gs, pm me. I want to upgrade my 5 series, but i dont want to go through the hassle of selling it. Hence upgrade. i am hoping the upgrade will be 600 TOPS...for a basic upgrade...mobo primarily...and maybe a 2.4ghz cpu HT possible. But all we can do is wait to see what Adam says.
But if its a grand, theres no way. You might as well buy a new system and sell the old one nonetheless. And thas NOT what i want to do really. I love my uxga screen...

$1000 is simply too much for a upgrade. Don't care what you get and if they going to do a upgrade for that price I say give us back the old parts.

I agree. a grand is no acceptable. But again we have to wait to see what adam has on tap. If its a grand, then i wont be getting an upgrade. Ill prolly sell my laptop.

Why would a grand be unacceptable?

you paid ~$2000 the first time.

Now, you can upgrade it all for $1000-$1200

or,

GEt a new one for ~$2000.... how does getting a new one make more sence??
