New Graphic Card Problem....

Thread Starter
My friend just got a MSI K8T Neo MOBO, he was running a ATI 9200 card. We uninstalled the ATI drivers, shut down the computer, installed the new card MSI 6600gt, the computer booted fine, installed the lastest drivers from the Nvidia site, rebooted the computer, and all we got was a messed up looking screen of colour. No boot up screen, no windows login screen, nothing but a blur of colours. Tried booting into the bios, and couldnt. So we took out the 6600gt and put the 9200 back in boot up and all was fine. Uninstalled the drivers, put the 6600gt back in, but nothing but the messed up colours this time. Tried booting 100000s of times, and nothing.

My question, could a graphics card mess up that fast after one "GOOD" boot??

Could it be anything else but the graphics card??

Thanks

Well, according to what you've said, it only messed up after you installed the drivers, which means that when it is using the standard basic VGA driver, it works for basic functions. Perhaps the driver is somehow a bad version or maybe the wrong driver. Can you boot into safe mode?

If you got a driver disc with the card, try the driver from that disc, if it's a different version than what is online. If that doesn't work, I think it's a defective card. Return it and get a replacement or refund for a different one.

NO, after putting the ATI back in and uninstalling the Nvidia drivers, we then put the 6600gt back in, but the screen is soooo messed up with colours, i dont even know what i'm looking at, so i cant even get to installing different drivers with it. The card only work good once.

What your saying is, you had ATI drivers loaded, when you installed the 6600, meaning you had the wrong drivers in the first place.

While your ATI card is in, uninstall the drivers. download and run DriverCleaner turn off the computer install the nvidia, reboot... install the latest driver.... 71.84's are nice, be sure to download the new nvidia drivers before you do anything....

Good luck.

we uninstalled the ATI drivers, i then used DriverCleaner. Put in the 6600, booted it everything ok, installed the Nvidia drivers, rebooted, but then the screen was just full of messed up colours from the boot. So, I took out the 6600, and put in the ATI again, and it booted fine. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver (Didnt install any ATI ones) turn off computer, put the 6600 back in, but i just had the same problem with the messed up colours.

Yeah, seriously. I would do a process of elimination, and return the card for a new one, to prove it isn't defective, or get yourself a different model. You also might look online to see if your friend's MOBO is particularly compatible with certain cards. I know in this day and age, universality wins the day, but in the old school days, MOBOs could be a bit twitchy about compatible upgrades.
