need help! on chosing a gaming notebook

I am looking for a gaming notebook that is under $2500. I was originally looking at the S4-3000 but many people have told me that it was not a good buy. so now I am looking again for a laptop that is good for gaming, playing games like Rome total war CivIII and a couple of other games like them, I also need it to do school projects. Battery life is also important to me. Any suggestions. thanks!

I'd reccomend the XPS2 but that breaks your budget.

Check out the Asus Z71v here. You'll be able to play anything out there and it has up to 6.5 hours battery life.

Get 1Gb ram and a 7200prm Hard drive..
The 9300 probably wont overheat but might happen if the vents are either blocked or filled with dust

1 GB of RAM will be plenty. The 7200RPM hard drive is unnecessary, in my opinion. A 5400RPM hard drive will work just fine, take less power, and be quieter. Overheating is an issue in some, but not all notebooks. If you have the time, check out several reviews on this site or others when you find something that you like. That should give you a good idea of what the issues are for any given laptop.

**also, please note that the Dell XPS2 & 9300, the Asus Z71v, and several other notebooks that people may talk about are not yet released. The Z71v is out next week, the 9300 is out the week after, and the XPS2 is out mid April. If you want to get a really good idea of the pros and cons of each, wait until you can find a few reviews on the model you're interested in.

Right now, in terms of gaming and portability as the same time, the Asus Z71V and the Acer 8104 are both prime candidate, especially in that price range.

The Cyberpower S4-3000 is the Uniwill 259IA, which is a very very nice laptop. Especially given the thin design of it. You should consider it as well. It isn't the latest Centrino and doesn't have PCI-e but if you were to buy barebone from mwave.com and plug in the parts yourself, you could get it for under 1500ish.

ya about VIDEO CARDs, i started to look at a Aleinware Sentia and i realy like it but the video card is a IntelĀ® Extreme Graphics 2 Technology, and as far as i can tell it has no memory of its own. some people told me that i should get MOBILE ATI RADEON 9700 PRO 128MB VIDEO. will the IntelĀ® Extreme Graphics 2 be a problem for gaming.

Its always best to have dedicated memory for graphics. I say hands down go with the dell 9300, sounds perfect if you dont mind the size. Get 1 gig of memory and ull b set. I play Rome on my 9100(a bit older) and it rocks. Battery life is not that great and it is heavy, but it is not possible to get a gaming maching that is light, its just part of the deal. Also the 9700 is a pretty good graphics card, but the 9300 comes with the new nvidia with 256 mb of mem.
Good luck!

Why are people dismissing the Dell iXPS2 as too expensive? It's offered for $2250 right now, and I think there's still a coupon that will bring the price down another $250 from the standard discount.

But, I agree that you can't go wrong with the 9300, and it is shipping now.

Say I buy a Sentia now or the iXPS2 or whatever, how long will it take for that notebook to be out classed by newer better ones. I am wondering this because i will be gone this entire summer working in a wilderness Camp where I will not be able to use a laptop or any other elctronical devices except on rare occasions. So if I buy a laptop now it will just sit in my house all summer. Would it just be better to buy one in the fall when newer stuff might be out?

In a word...

YES!

It is always better to wait until you absolutely have to buy a computer to make your purchase...you should make gains on the price/performance ratio by waiting, plus it gives the market time to rollout new technologies (full line of Sonoma and Turion notebooks)...just keep in mind shipping/build times when you do order, but in general it is always, always, ALWAYS better to wait...

...what he said. As I've seen many times before on this forum, until you absolutely can NOT wait any longer, you should keep looking for the next thing on the horizon. And when you DO buy something, DON'T WORRY about when it will be outdated or something else will come out that's better. You just spent a ton of money on a quality product. Enjoy it!
