P30-RG1 vs. M40-JM3

Well, i've narrowed it down to these two notebooks. They both fit my budget nicely and I like both, I just need advice from owners of either which may be better for my purpose. First off, I play alot of DAOC and the odd first person shooter game. I also do quite a bit of programming and will also be using this for school work. These are the systems,

------- Toshiba M40-JM3 -------
1.6 Ghz Intel M Processor (533 FSB)
512 MB Ram PC2700
60 GB 4200 rpm Hardrive
Super Combo Multi Drive
15.4" WXGA w/ Trubrite
128MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 6600

Price: $1779 CD

------- Toshiba P30-RG1 -------
3.06 Ghz Pentium 4 (533 FSB)
512 MB Ram PC2700
60 GB 4200 rpm Hardrive
Super Combo Multi Drive
17" WXGA w/ Trubrite
128MB DDR ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700

Price: $1699 CD

Anyways, if anyone has advice as to which would be the better system for gaming and school work please post. Last time I checked DAOC: ToA expansion didnt have extremely high requirements, I believe 1.5 Gig, 256 MB w/ 32 MB video was the requirements last I checked. I guess my question is will it run good on either of these. (ohh yeah, and I know the hardrives in both are pretty slow... but again both of these fit my budget). Thanks

These guys are my university campus computer store. You cannot get that price unless you go to my school

lucky son of a (beep)

my university store normally is way higher priced than regular retail as opposed to cheaper. if you can get the m40 at that price then go for that model....it is the better of the choices in my opinion.

But can the M40's handle games ? Like i mentioned earlier I play alot of DAOC and the odd 3D shooter.

a very good friend of mine has an m40 and uses it for gaming in the order that you are talking about and i have not heard about any issues with it, it sounds like it should be very good for it, and from what i know of hardware it is more than capable and in fact better than the p30 for the gaming glory.

Hey people,

First off, the P30 doesn't have the newest technology for its DVD combo drive. The M40 does.

2, the M40 has the Centrino technology and the P30 doesn't.

3, the M40 weighs 2.72kg (6.00lbs) while the P30 is a lot more at 4.3kg (9.49lbs).

4, the M40 has longer battery life (thank you Centrino technology).

I don't use the M40 for gaming but rather drafting and 3D rendering. It handles this pretty well.

I've used the M40 on my lap for over 6 hours without major discomfort from heat, a major concern with other laptops.

The speakers, Harman Kardon, are great. The P30 has a different system.

I hope this helps.

THe P30's "17 is much better for gaming and movies.
I have a "17 laptop and I will never go back to a "15. I use my P30 3D and graphic design, and it reeeally helps to have extra screen space when running multiple applications.

The speakers are almost double the size in the P30, so you get much better sound.

I have had Far Cry at medium settings and it runs great, but as far as performance goes, you are going to get a lot more power with the M40.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but how? The differences are the similar NVidia 128 video card and the 1.6ghz M chip.Am I missing something?
it has the newer graphics technology of a pci express graphics card, it is better than the old agp cards, and provides a theoretical improvement in performance. the power that they are refering to may not be the actual chip power of the system but the general performance, since the centrino in the m40 is alot more powerful than the ghz would indicate. the 1.8ghz m40 is supposed to be even better than the 1.6 in terms of providing processing power, i forget what the conversion is but those are performing like a desktop in the 3+ghz range.

nope it is a university store, meant only for students at memorial university in newfoundland, sucks since the prices are great but that is how it goes, this one is not for the general public.
