raid question?

I am having to send my Alien 7700m back to ireland because the internal power supply isn't charging the batterys when on....

now the question:-
i dont want them to format/read the important data(clients etc) so i have removed the drives. they are raided together (2x60 into a 120 drive) btw.

My chances are that they are going to replace the whole unit(or at least the mobo).... would the hard drives be affected when i place them into the new unit?

i.e.
would it just boot straight up
or
would i need to play with the raid bios....
OR
would it just not work and crash and burn in the pit of hell?

cheers.

That is a good question and you have a better than fair chance that it will work. You may have to re-activate Windows XP (and you may not). How is that for an answer?

The reason it SHOULD work is that the hardware will be the same, so all drivers and settings will be compatible and working. The motherboard will be the same model, the video the same, the NIC the same, etc.

I have replaced motherboards with similar models and things have come right up, no problem.

The reason you may have to re-activate is that the Windows Activation scheme creates a very unique code based on your hardware. MUCH of the hardware is based on the Network Interface Card MAC address, which will be different. Ditto the modem and motherboard. BUT, another big part of the unique code is based on the harddrive serial number, which will be the same, as well as the types of hardware found.

Assuming they haven't changes the RAID chip or firmware, I think you have a fair shot of it working fine, with Windows asking you to re-activate, which is no big deal.

hmm but does the hdd's/raid array have anything that has to match... serial numbers/tags to each other?
