Really need help...will only run on AC

I will admit I don't know that much about laptops and since desktops don't have batteries I am stuck. I have a Compaq Presario 700 (710us to be exact) which I got second hand from my father. The problem is that the thing will only run if it is plugged in to AC. When it is plugged in I can check the battery status and the computer reports it at 98% charged. The battery itself has a charge indicatior on it which shows full charge also. The problem is that when I try to start it with just battery...Nothing, not even an attempt like it is a bad battery. Similar issue if I have it running on AC and unplug to attempt to force it to battery...instant Off. So the laptop knows the battery is there but no juice is flowing or being pulled. I know that the original charging unit was replaced when my dad had the computer but that doesn't seem to be the issue...when it is plugged into AC it even says it is charging...plus the battery is at full. The laptop remains plugged into AC often if that would have possible caused this; however I did have it running on battery alone earlier this week so I am lost.

From what you have described :
a)the battery is dead
b)the battery is not getting charged/taking in very little charge/the life of the battery has expired.
A Li-ion battery loses its charge capacity as and when it is used...They also have a certain charge/discharge cycle and after a few years you will have to replace the battery on any laptop.
So either try a different battery or a charger to check if it works.

I agree. Your battery has charged its last. I had a Sony Vaio and when the battery died on me, it did the same thing. It looks fine under AC power, but take it off, and whoops! the notebook died.

It could be a problem with your power subsystem...

I fried mine on my toshiba 2800, won't work with batteries

Thanks for the feedback everyone...I am going to try a new battery tomarrow and if that doesn't solve it the it is circuit city's problem....would you imagine that, bought in 2002 and still has a service plan thru 2006...my dad made a good move with that one give the issues this thing has had.

Is the Battery covered?? It's considered a disposable item...but yes, if it's not the battery, then it could be the charging circuit -- I doubt it though, but if it is, then it's CC's problem

keep in mind,

LI-Ion batteries HATE being in a discharged state, if they are below 1v for more than a couple weeks they will never take a charge again

li-ion batteries like being charged all the time, so if they are used and below 100% charge them back up asap

i don't think its that they'll never take a charge...it's just the laptop won't be able to charge them...they will need an external charging device.
