IBM ThinkPad G41 vs Compaq R3000T

I have an option between IBM ThinkPad G41 ANd Compaq R3000T. I am a programmer so i would be running cpu intensive applications, also playing games (Q3A, CounterStrike). So Which one is a better buy?

(See my msg 4-5 thread below for their specs)

What's your budget? Options? Accessories? Also, next time, please post the specs of both laptops you are considering.

If you are going to be gaming, you should NOT get anything with integrated graphics. So, the G41 option with the 64mb GeForce Go 5200 would be much better. Do you have access to all G41s, or are you limited to a certain model.

I don't want to say much more with additional information. But, just going off of this, and if budget is not a problem, you should get the IBM. I implicitly trust them more, based off of past experience and other people's stories.

I dont know anything about these models but i just bought the Compaq X6000 and I am returing it. They sent me a computer with a broken keyboard and the right button on the track pad is crushed down into the case as well. There custmor service was horrabile. Not trying to be negitve just hope that this helps taking care of me after i spend 2000+ dollars is important and Compaq failed horrably at doing this.

if you're looking at the r3000t, you might also take a look at the uniwill 258kao.

few reasons for that thought:
1)you're a programmer and need an intensive cpu, AMD64 is probably better for you than P4.
2) compaq has an ati 9600 where the uniwill has a 9700....might not sound like much but with some omega drivers (assuming you're using windows) you shall see a nice differance in performance.

both laptops are the same size (roughly). the benefits of the compaq is the really nice speakers (as far as lappy speakers go) and an option to grab a wsxga or even wuxga (uniwill only has wxga).

the ibm is a nice laptop....kind of $$$

i had to call HP/Compaq tech support.....2 hours on hold, 15 minutes of talk and no help at all. they even denied that they made the product.... (it was a home pna networking kit)

Here goes the link for r3000t
http://www.exactchoice.com/profile_1759.aspx

and here is for IBM one
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/st...catalogId=-840

Both would be with 512 ram and 80G hdd. IBM's processor is 3+Ghz with HT and has 5300 rpm hdd (as opposed to Compaq's 2.8GHz and 4200rpm hdd). Somehow i find this compaq one really sexy (due to WXGA).

Is there any particular reason you are looking at the P4 based Compaq R3000T(integrated graphics) rather than the AMD based R3000Z which also has a low end dedicated graphics??

The R3000T only has the equivalent of a Radeon 9200 (and it doesn't have its own memory, either). This is bad. Just on this basis, I would reject the R3000T. The G41, on the other hand, has the 5200Go w/64mb dedicated memory. If you are going to be playing any games, the experience will be much better with the 5200Go.

The WXGA is really sweet, and the wider screen will help you run things side-by-side. However, I don't know how big of a deal that is for you.

The 5400RPM hdd is a hell of a lot faster than the 4200. If you are developing software and going through compile cycles, this will make a big difference. Both CPUs are basically the same.

I know some people are making a big deal of going with A64 vs P4 because of software development. Honestly, unless you can find one for the same price and with the same features as these two, you will not see that big of a difference. Also, while the A64 is a little faster at compiling, the hard drive is the real bottleneck (unless you get enough RAM to run a RAM drive with all your files stored in memory).

Considering abf's proposal, I configured one of the Uniwill's at http://www.rayservers.com/catalog/pr...products_id=43. However, the price came to ~$1500 for comparable specs. Obviously, I just picked the first buy who would let me buy it off of google. There might be cheaper prices out there.

Another point to take into account: warranty. At least for 1 year, so that you are covered.
