Windows Explorer crashing...

Ok...So I have a 7700...have had it going on 2 monthes or so now. I use it mostly for gaming and have only recently needed to locate individual files. Whenever I go through My Computer into a directory within 20 seconds or so I get the box that pops up sending info back to Alienwareletting me know that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and it reboots explorer if I happen to be running anything else at te time...it remains running but the desktop icons disappear (blank desktop) and then they show up again once Windows Explorer restarts. To be perfectly honest I have no idea if this problem existed from day one or not as I had no need to go looking for any files.

I called Tech support and they had me perform a chkdsk which resulted in no errors...the next step according to them is a system restore. My question I guess is if anyone has a clue as to what could be causing this. I would much rather find the fix for the problem then to reinstall Windows (which is what I am afraid the next step will be with Tech support).

The best thing to start with would probably be a Windows Update. There may be some hotfixes you're missing. If that doesn't fix it, unplug all your peripherals and, where feasible, uninstall their drivers. If it's OK then, try reinstalling them one by one. It may be a bad driver.

That was happening on my Dell 8200 and then the Area 51 right after I got it. It turned out it was a virus, it would boot up to just the desktop (no icons) after awhile. It's a very well programmed virus that slowly corrupted exe files. It even tuned off system restore. If found out about it at work. I put a memory stick in a pc at work and a Norton Utilities pop id'd the virus and quarantined it. My boss's boss called me and told me to call our corporate headquarters right away. Man I was a little worried to say the least. The guy that answered the number they gave me was a Symantec programmer working on out firewall's and servers. We're a very big customer so we rate full time software support. He told me all about the virus and how it worked. If you don't have the latest virus protection it might be the cause of your problems.
