Which one to get?

Hey

I have been want to get I mac for I while now. I have narrowd it down to two choices (these two mainly because of price) the new mac mini or a new 12' ibook?

The mac mini I can get for $635 w/tax(1.42/combo) and the ibook for $894(1.2/combo). Will I notice the .2 difference in speed? And with the supposed release of Tiger in Apirl, will I be able to upgrade w/o buying Tiger outright?

Thanks any help would be useful.

just depends on if you need it to be portable or not.

you'll have to buy tiger to install it

Usually Apple will send automatic upgrades for people who purchased the previous OS with a computer within 30 days.

but that is 30 days of shelf date i believe, not announcement date.. either way, if it is in stores by the 15th you should NOT have to pay for it.. cept media/shippingcosts = $20.

the mac mini will be faster than the ibook, buying ram for it will be cheaper and you can use any screen you want with it.
the speed different is not just the .2 ghz that you will notice but the ram speed the mac mini is 333mhz and the ibook is 233mhz (i think)

if you only plan on using it at home the mac mini will be a better choice for you.

about tiger in the PAST apple have offered cheap upgrades for those that bought a mac within 30 days of the release of the OS, but things could change this time, who knows. those that are good with torrents and such will know ways of getting it cheaper but i is not very legal though.

Ram speeds for the Mini, iBook and PowerBook should be 333 MHz, I believe.

33 MHz RAM would bring the system to a crawl.

I'd go for the iBook simply for the portability.

I'm with you, i'd buy the ibook all things considered.. if i had no notebook. If i was buying for me - right this second, i'd buy the mini and use it as a server

Did you get any coupons with your iBook?

If Tiger comes out within the next couple weeks, you're supposed to use the coupons to get the upgrade IIRC.

Apple has never actually used those coupons for any upgrades. My Powerbook came with Jaguar, but was in the window for the upgrades to Panther. I went to a website, punched in my serial number, date off my reciept, and a credit card number. A few days later Panther upgrade discs showed up, and my bank account was $19.95 lower.

Thus far, Apple has not given free upgrades to any product until the release date is announced. Bought a system one day before iLife 05 was announced? Well, you get to pay the full price if you want it. Same with Panther. If you bought one day before they formally announced the release date, then you got stuck with paying the full price.

To be fair, you did get Panther for over 100 dollars off the price.

Wait for Tiger.

The Mac Mini and iBook are almost the same thing. iBook has a screen and already has wireless networking.

You'd almost need to add a 7200rpm drive and a 1GB RAM stick either way, so...
