i6000 owvers: Are your fans constantly ON?

Sorry to start another thread guys. I tried to email Dell on this issue but their ever-intelligent Indian reps kept on teeling me that "Desktop PC's need the fans to be ON all the time...." ANYWAYS, my fans never turn off and I just want to make sure if you 6000 owners experience the same.

Thanks in advance.

Use the tool: I8K fan control. (http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/) to check the fanspeeds. The fan on my I6K always runs in the slow mode.
Using I8K fan control utility, you can increase an decrease the fanspeeds.

See if there are processes running which use a lot of CPU-Cycles.

Does your fangui report unable to set fan 2?

Yes, my fan is always running too. It's on slow and not too annoying. I tried I8kFanGUI and Fanspeed but neither work well with the I6000 chipset (for me anyway). It can't read the speed of the Video card (Fan 2) and doesn't read all of the system information that would make it more useful.

They will come out with an update one day soon and then I will try it again.

The I6K only has One Fan.

I have the 6000d so there's one fan for CPU, another fan for GPU. Maybe the 6000 integrated graphics only has one fan.

Are you sure? The heat from the GPU is transferred by heatpipe to a heatsink which is next to the heatsink of the CPU.

See if I can find a pic..

That makes sense. Maybe this is why the 6000's fan is not configured to turn off and on automatically. One thing though, when i run fangui, it reports the speed of the Fan # 2 @ 922RPM BUT it can not read the status of the second fan. just the speed.

Do the default settings in FanGUI control the fan or only observe it?

Picard, when you first turn on a system that has been off for a while do the fans come on instantly? Try this, blow cold air for a while on it (open a window if it's windy) and see if the fan will turn off when the temperature comes down.

YES the fan blows instantly the moment i turn my lappy on. Fangui can read and control JUST fan 1 but not fan 2. Im thinking the 6000 is really designed to "fan on" constantly. I'm still skeptic though.

The BIOS controls the fans by default but you can always give that control to FanGUI. You might want to see if there is a new version of the BIOS that changes the fan behavior.

My 600m runs the fan on the lowest speed under normal conditions (system has been running for a while and not under stress). It does turn off occasionaly when the room temperature is around 60 F.

FanGUI actually works fine except that everytime it controls the fans it always gives the prompt: Can not set fan 2 about 5 times. Im thinking the 6000 only has one fan. The x300 gets it's cooling from the CPU fan like explained in the above post.

Yeah hopefully a new bios will resolve this issue.

I had the same problem before,
what i did was i assigned the settings for FAN2 as "NO CHANGES"
It pops-up because its trying to control the FAN2 which the lappy does not have, same for both 600m and 6000d, if you set the FAN2 to "No Changes" then it should stop popping up.

But does anyone have another alternative other than FanGui?

So what are your settings with this? Do you have the "Enable Temperature control" enabled?

I just put my hand next to the fan outlet and it is blowing air that is COOLER than room temp. Why on earth is it even running if its that cool inside?

Let's just hope this issue gets resolved in a new bios that Dell will release who knows when. I am actually disturbed by the fact that the fan is always on. Fan combined with a 7200rpm HD is a noisy notebook.

yep i got that enabled.

you need to change the Values of the "Second Fan Speed" at the options in the "CPU temp control" tab, set it to no change..all four of them.

Got it! Thanks man! The 9300 family has the same issue as we have. Im still wondering why these new Dell system has its fans on ALWAYS ON mode.

Sorry for bringing this topic up again. But what is a safe temperature for a laptop. I just downloaded FanGUI. What are everyone else's settings for it? I don't want to burn the CPU or something :-P. Thanks!

up to 50 for normal usage. up to 75 for intense gaming or video editing. if you use fangui, be sure to always check your dimm temps. it should not get above 55.
