9300 came today with faulty screen - Page 2

Do you have an on-site warranty and service agreement? They should send someone out to fix your problem or bring you a replacement screen (since it will have to be replaced).

Last time (and the only time) I had a problem with a Dell upon shipment arrival they sent someone out to my office the very next day with a new hard drive already loaded and ready to go. Within a few minutes I was fixed up.

How do I find out who makes the LCD?
Part number: W5411
you better return it

Well....
Sorry to learn about your screen. I received my 9300 today too with the WUXGA truelife and I'm happy with it. No problems here. Slight sparkle but very livable.

Sparkle? I'm still trying to understand this sparkle thing with the WUXGA. Does it look to you like they just put a glossy finish on top of an anti-glare screen? There should be no sparkle or sheen or anything but glare on a glossy LCD.

I wouldn't put it passed Dell to simply have done that. Afterall for a big corporation, profit is everything.

Yeah, I'm almost certain they did that. We know that Samsung makes the panel, and Samsung only lists one 17-inch WUXGA on their site. That would really suck if they just glossed the Samsung. I mean the Samsung looks fine to me, but I don't need the glossy layer on top if they still leave the anti-glare coating underneath! I can do that myself with a cheap-ass NuShield piece of plastic.

that's right it wouldn't make any good

Well so far 2/4 guys or so that I've seen are reporting a sparkle effect so it doesn't seem too promising. I'm with you on this one - Dell most likely put on a nushield type of crap coating to make it glossy. Hmm is it possible for us to replace the lcd with a 3rd party one from another manufacturer?

Guys...
It's by no means anything like the Phillips LG screen. If you like the Y4014, It's basically the same with a gloss over it. Like I mentioned....Slight very slight sparkle. I like it for one over the previous 9200 I had.

What's the Y4014?
The Samsung Y4014 was one of the more favorable WUXGA screens when Dell was having the issues with the Dim/Sparkly Phillips LG screen.

I do like the Y4014. I own the Y4014. But they should have just left it alone. I would be OK with glare from a glossy screen if it was an improvement, but I'm not sure I'm willing to tolerate glare with the exact same LCD underneath. Oh well, I'll be able to compare the two side-by-side pretty soon. Maybe I'll like the built-in non-optional NuShield.

This is getting depressing. Hey does anyone know if you can replace the Dell LCD with say a 17" sony x-brite panel (or another 3rd party), assuming the dimensions are similar?

Aw damn, now I'm worried. Suppose to get my 9300 this Wednesday and it sounds like these screen problems are a common thing with the 9300 and 9200

Off topic but was Sasuke taken? This week is Gaara's fight vs Kimimaro

Even a slight amount of "sparkle" is annoying. I've never had it on any notebook in the past 10 years except the Dell 9200 (REALLY bad sparkle) and a Dell 2001fp LCD (slight sparkle, still annoyed me). Got rid of them both within 24 hours.

so does this mean that the XPS2 systems will be comming with this same type od screen???
I'm not depressed, worried or agitated. I will judge my screen when it comes. If I'm satisfied I will keep it, if I'm not I will not.

I don't think Dell or Samsung just put a glossy coating on top of the Non-glare. That's absurd. They might use the same underlying screen and put non-glare or glossy on it. I'm certainly not going to get all worked up over it now. It's no biggy. I will be disappointed if it doesn't meet my expectations, which are high. But again, I'll just send it back and keep waiting for a more impressive product. In the meantime, though, what the frick am I going to do with my Pentium M 2.13 and 2 gig of memory I bought for it if I end up returning it? Hmmm.

Hmmmm..
I will be getting my 9300 tomorrow (well - atleast that's what it says on tracking). I have no idea what sparkly screens mean - but if it turns out bad ... (controlling anger).. I dont think I will be able to go through the customer service torment and reordering and wait again. The D810 also appears to have some issues with soundcard.
On the positive(!duh!) side, looks like the nice new notebooks from Dell has forced competition to lower prices. So I just configured (favorite pastime) an HP8000 notebook with XPPro+Penitium-640(3.2GHz)+17"SXGA+100GB 5400rpm + 2 GB RAM + 256MB x600 + DVD RW+ 3 year for $2700. Very interestingly, there is NO Tax in MN so the price is very appealing indeed!! So all is not lost - good things will happen either way.

I don't think anybody will be disappointed with the LCD. Samsung LCDs are good. Mine has a slight sheen from the anti-glare coating, but it's definitely something I can live with. Only those who are expecting a best-of-class LCD might be slightly disappointed.

I'm just REALLY curious if Dell is trying to pull a fast one with the TrueLife glossy coating. If that's the case, the *only* advantage to upgrading to a 9300 for me would be the go6800, which is still nothing to sneeze at.
