9300 owners: tell us about your WUXGA - Page 33

Well, I seem to recall some of the Samsung receivers saying they had some sparkle. And apparently it's not as intense as without the glossy coating. But it really doesn't make sense to me. The sparkle coating is a DEFECT. It's a bad outcome to someone's "bright" idea. That someone decided they could get away with. Happens all the time. What I don't understand is how it could find its way into 2 models. That's just weird.

Well the tech i talked to referred to the fact that it's the same problem he saw on the 9200 and i even gave him the part number of the replacement Samsung LCD kit everyone is talking about and he confirmed that that also had sparkles. I guess we will find out soon enough in the next couple of days.

Are you satisfied with your screen?

I think we need to do a reality check here.

Who has a 9300 which has no sparkle effect and is still satisfied with their screen?
NOT satisfied, 90% chance this puppy is headed back to dell's shipyard
post #645 of 904
I dont think any screens are missing the sparkle feature. It seems from the opinions of people on the forum from the 9200 that the samsung is the less of the two evils in regard to sparklies. And from my own experiances with samsung lcds is they have less light leak.

I beleive Lu gets his installed today, so we will hear for sure about this samsung. Also Lu, check out the model numbers of your old LG and your current samsung he's putting in if you get a chance =)

I dont think this is a defect personally. I have seen just about every 15-17" WUXGA screen on the market and they all have this effect to some degree. I find the LG to be slightly worse than others but the colors on the LG are about the best out there. I find the Samsung to be better than average but it doesn't have the awesome color depth of the LG. I highly doubt this was a "make it or break it" for Dell.

I would say 90 percent [or more] of the customers who bought these screens have never been to any of these forums and doubtful they even notice this effect. I know at least ten people who have the LG panels and never even noticed the "sparkle" until it was pointed out and even then none of them consider it a defect.

i would not say 90 percent of the customers would not notice because i showed my laptop with the Lg screen (verified by powerstrip) to like 8 of my friends without even mentioning what they should be looking for and they all pretty much notice the "sparkle" right off the bat. then i play css on it and they are like wow. as soon as the other members get their replacement samsung lcds installed, i will be calling dell to either replace my laptop, return the whole thing, or if a tech can come out and replace the screen. if samsung's screen is not that much of an improvement in terms of sparkliness it's going bye bye. it's a shame though, the laptop as a whole is fantastic. i can't even surf the internet for 10 minutes without the screen bothering me with all the white backgrounds shimmering. anyone know if the wxga is worth a try?

I still haven't seen the 9300 (just got my delay email today, on the scheduled ship date), but I have seen all four LCDs (without their glossy coating).

If you can live with the lower resolution, the Samsung WXGA+ is the best of the bunch. The LG WXGA+ has a little bit of sparkle, but not nearly as much as the WUXGA, and it's a pretty good panel. The Samsung WUXGA has more of a "sheen" than a sparkle. Whites are a bit dusty, but not "wet and splotchy" like the LG. Colors on the Samsung WUXGA look washed out compared to the punchy colors on the LG WUXGA, but that can be fixed to a considerable degree by decreasing the gamma correction.

Of the 17" screens which ones in particular have you seen? You say "they all have this effect to some degree"

I have seen the HP ZD7000, the Sager 8790 and the Sony A170, the Toshiba Quosimo. None of these have any sparkle effect at all.

Thanks Yellowit4 I really really want to order, and you make a great deal of sense. I wish I had never seen this thread!LOL

at work i've seen the past 2 models of the sony 17inch with wuxga and i have never seen sparkle or anything like this before. it makes me sad when i go to work because i see all the laptops with truebright, xbrite, true blah blah blah, and they look fantastic. i change all the backgrounds to white just to see if there is any evidence of sparkle, and i find none. if hp,compaq, toshiba, and sony can get it right i don't see why dell , one of the top seller of computers, can not.
Are there any pictures out there of the effect?
its hard to capture with a camera, only thing you can get by taking a picture is the light leakage. sparkle looks like someone wiped the screen with a wet towel without the rainbow colors.

If a 9300 owner would let me know if this captures it at all, I'll put a link in the first page:

If not, I'll just let that thread die a lonely death.

Here dellbert, i took a shot with your picture open in the side with the same background your using and a few windows so you can see diff colors.
