It is fairly simple to replace the LCD. Not like a 5 minute job but probably less than an hour. (And once you do it once it is much easier.) Any time you tamper with the internal components of your system it is possible to mess it up - so there is always some risk.
You can see exactly what is involved here:

Depends how smart you're in talking with them. If you get them to send you a replacement, your 21 days doesn't get 'renewed' when the replacement laptop comes. So, I would say this. If your screen is something you can't live with, just do a complete return and reorder. This way, you get an entire 21 days again with the new order. Keep doing this till you're satisfied or you've given up.

For me, I am getting a replacement. If the replacement is better, then I'll keep that, otherwise, I'm keeping my existing unit. So basically, I'm just giving myself one chance to get it right. I'm at around day 18 or so, and my replacement will come in another 7 days, so I'll be out of my 21 days. I'm doing this because I can live with the flaws of the existing unit. I'm hooking this up to a fantastic Dell 2405 24" LCD screen (I own 5 desktop LCD's and have gone through ownership of a total of 8 LCD's). I'll be looking at that more than the laptop.

I have the J9662/LPL0000, it had sparkles the very first day, but after a day, they were completely gone. I also had some light leakage, but now it's gone. It's an amazing screen...I love it.

I got a 9300 with the J9662/LPL0000. It is a "sparkle" nightmare. I tend to think that anyone who says they have a non-sparkle LG screen is either lying or has poor eyesight. I'm probably just bitter, though. lol

Otherwise, it is a pretty nice monitor. No dead pixels. The 1920x1200 resolution at 96dpi is not as small as it was made out to be. I do have better than 20/20 eyesight, though. It is sharp, crisp and perfectly readable with ClearType OFF. The colors are definitely on the "cool" side, with light greys looking almost blue/white. I haven't tweaked anything yet, though. Colors are vivid and black is BLACK. There is a bit of light leakage at the bottom, and the bottom corners are just a tiny bit dark.

That said, I've been using the computer for about a week and the sparkles don't hurt my eyes. They are simply an annoyance when I concentrate on them. I may ask for a Samsung replacement and swap them out to see which I prefer, but I am actually content with this thing despite the sparkles.

To each his own.

I have the J9662 on my XPS2. It's not that I don't SEE sparkles, it's just that I have to think about them to see them. I have the same level of sparkle on my Dell 2000FP desktop monitor, my Planar 17" monitor, my Treo 650 smartphone....

The monitor that started this fiasco was on a 9200 back in November of last year. I had one of those. It had sparkles so bad that it was like having frost on the screen. There was a holographic effect that made my eyes go crosseyed. This monitor is back down to the level of my other LCDs.

I've personally been wondering if this "sparkle hysteria" was left over hysteria from November that just won't die.

my truelife is great. the only true sparkles I see is from dust that collects on the screen. Outside of that, white can be a bit 'grainy' but it's far from what I would consider sparkles, and is pretty much the same as my other LCD screens (20" Dell, 19" Samsung 190T, 17" Samsung) have. I notice that this screen is brighter then most of those screens, even with the 'grain' on white.

it's worth it to watch 1080p HDTV clips on it.

I went to CompUSA yesterday to see if I could find a Lappy that was running WUXGA and there was a samsung there that had it. Unless its a problem that Dell only has, which I have heard other companies have the problems too, I really can't see sparkles.

It was a bit grainy but thats about it...

From what I've read here, I got an LG:

J9662 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LENGTH/LONG

Looks amazing....no sparkles....white background does seem a little grainy, but no more so that the ViewSonic CRT I am using here at work. Very little
light leakage. I'm very very pleased.

I would do the same but I got a really good deal awhile back on a $700 coupon and 1/2 price 2nd battery deal they were running, I tried to put the same config together now but it comes out higher

I got my 9300 on the 27th of May, so I've had it for 2 weeks now.

According to Powerstrip & Dell, it has the J9662/LPL0000 LCD, and it's very sparkly with a white or green background. At the moment, it's actually hurting my eyes to view things while typing. I find this really annoying. I also seem to have dark edges and corners, and have a dark fading effect centered and at the bottom. Maybe it's some sort of leakage.

I'm not really sure what to do about it... but I was planning on requesting a replacement right now, especially after reading about others luck finding a better replacement. I especially like the idea of being able to compare LCD's once you get a replacement shipped to you.

Either way, I'll probably submit a request/email Dell within the next 15 minutes... unless someone stops me.

Edit: So I got a response back, and they will be sending me a replacement LCD, but it lists a price on it... so hopefully they don't attempt to charge me. I already emailed them to ask, because if I do get charged for it, they can go **** themselves.

I did however notice that I will be getting the Samsung LCD, so hopefully that makes a difference. I shall find out when it arrives

LB/Samsung

Until I looked at a few pics posted around here I did not even know what light leakage was. My i9300(1.73ghz, 6800GO, 1.25gb kingston+stock) came with the LG(J9662/LPL0000) screen, and I just finished installing the Samsung(SEC5557). I used my 3mo warrenty and had them mail the Samsung to me. The main reason I wanted a replacement was because the LG has tiny dark spots on the bottom left and bottom right corners that really annoyed me, and were not visible for a couple months until after I got the machine, so afraid they would get worse I ordered a replacement. Here's a few key differences between the LG(J9662/LPL0000) and Samsung(SEC5557):

LG(J9662/LPL0000)
-Considerably more sparkles
-Less light leakage and blacks are very very nice
-Horrible whites

Samsung(SEC5557)
-Less sparkles, very acceptable
-Noticebly more light leakeage but only on pure black backgrounds, dark games(doom3) still look outstanding
-Very pretty whites, but noticebly different from a CRT monitor
-Brighter, more vivid
-Clearer and easier to look at

Likenesses:
-Both have very nice color, only after tweaking Nvidia settings for the Samsung though
-The Samsung also has tiny darkspots in the bottom left and bottom right corners, though they are about half the size and not nearly as noticable so hopefully they don't get worse
-Pain in the ass to remove/install :/

I am happy with the replacement, it's definately a nicer screen and I will be keeping it, even if I wasn't allowed a replacement I'd of kept the LG. Although my original concern didn't go away, it's not nearly as bad and I don't feel like pushing my luck any further, after all... it is still an overpriced dell piece of shit, even if it was $1186.

it so gets me excited

Be careful with your installation as it is very easy to scratch the notebook when trying to pry off the cover above the keyboard. To me getting that darn cover off was the hardest part. I kept thinking it was going to break.

i believe i have the samsung screen, it has 7 power lvls and does not show up as lg.. (rivatuner, registry, reforce, anything) LIGHT LEAK is only noticeable at bootup when screen is black. i use a black visual style and it is as dark and rich as my desktops 19 inch viewsonic CRT. I love it

Got mine last week and have no problems. Some bad light leakage, but hoping that will go away this week. Otherwise I love it, and have no problems reading on it. I love all the real estate.

I got the same screen and my machine was built on 12/01/2005.
Are we getting reject screens from others?

More than the leakage and sparkles, I have the glossy screen.
I got a super deal on this laptop and not the type to cause useless expenses to a company like Dell, but... hum....
