iPod Question

I've got pretty much my entire library of CDs on my iPod. While listening to music, I will rate the songs in the iPod (1 to 5 stars)... This is great for creating playlists and narrowing down stuff I don't like, BUT...

...is there a way to sync this info back to the files residing on my G5 in the master library? I have a new iPod shuffle and I'd like to be able to sort by ratings when determining what songs to put on the shuffle.

Thanks...

The only way, AFAIK, that ratings and stuff will synch back with your iTunes library is if you have the iPod set to auto sync. Just plug it in and it'll merge any changes made.

Autosync kinda scares me because I don't know EXACTLY what it does... What if it drops all my ratings? Or decides that the smaller playlist (with the same name) is the one I want?

I haven't had any experience with the feature, and it seems a gamble with 10,000+ songs.

Auto sync does what it says it does—it syncs the music library on your computer with the one on your iPod and vice versa. However, if you've had your iPod on manual this whole time I don't know how it will react. If the libraries are exactly the same there's a good chance that it'll sync properly the first time, but there's also a chance that it'll disregard the ratings and playlists on the iPod and replace them with those on the computer. But, once you have the thing set to auto sync every time you plug it in from then on it will just change the ratings and playlists according to how you've changed them yourself.

As far as gambling with your songs goes, however, as long as you have the entire library on your computer they'll be safe.

any songs you loaded from another person's machine will be gone.

is this a windows or a mac formatted ipod.. if windows there is a file you can get to by browsing the disk to backup your ratings.

there IS software to do this iirc i juts can't recall what it is.. i would check the more specific ipod sites out there like ipodlounge.com or something.

This is a mac formatted ipod.

What do you mean any songs I've loaded from another machine will be gone? I started the CD-mp3 burning on my wifes iBook... I then did the rest on my G5. I copied all the songs over from the iBook... so there are songs from all over the place, but my MASTER LIBRARY OF EVERYTHING is all on the G5.

from what I know....

I have my entire mp3 collection on my shuttle. I have a few hundred songs on my laptop. I have my shuttle set to AutoSync with my iPod. All my info updates between the two, ie playcounts, ratings, etc. (as far as I know). I have accidentally plugged my iPod into my laptop, with AutoSync on, and it erased all the songs on my iPod and copied all of my laptop songs onto the iPod. Ooops.
Resync with my shuttle and everything was back to normal.

As far as syncing goes, I think it will only add/ delete songs on your iPod. It won't delate anything on your computer. This is on a pc though, I haven't hooked my iPod up to my mac yet. No need to since all the mp3's are on my shuttle.

then you should befine.

kwik you are correct it will delete from the ipod if not present in the master library.

ABF - your uninformed posts that are anti mac are getting tiresome. Consider this a warning. You may wish to move back into areas on fhte forum where your expertise will be present, or demonstrated. Please stop with the anti apple stuff.

i suppose, but i my self to like to discover the unix side of mac os x as well sometimes it is better to stop having a UI spoil you.

and generalising mac users to say something positive is just as bad as a negative comment it is a stereotype and should be avoided.

Boy is this a moronic posting!

Not only do you not provide your supposed "better software alternative," but you ignored the basic premise of the question. The iPod ratings.

Care to suggest something, or were you just trolling... again?

Actually, I'm not completely sure that I'll be fine. If I sync, I'm pretty sure the computer library will overwrite the iPod library. Since all my song ratings are on the iPod (but not all the songs themselves... just most), I think I'd lose all my ratings.

freestyle there are many utlities out there that will copy song off your ipod back onto your computer and keep all ratings and such.
