Upgrading processor in 9300/XPS2

According to theregister online computer news site, we should expect Intel to beef up their Dothan processor speeds in July and significantly cut the prices for the current processors.

I am wondering if one strategy today could be to buy a 9300 or XPS2 equipped with the slowest processor 1.6 or 1.7GHz and upgrade it in summer. Do you guys think it will be physically possible to upgrade? Does this scheme make sense at all?

Yes it will be possible. The XPS2 only comes with a 2.0 as a minimum though. Also, you probably void your warranty by doing so.

I don't think you void the warranty. The warranty on the CPU, of course, but you should have one from whereever you bought it. Dell gives instructions publicly on how to change the processor, so that is implied consent to user changing the cpu.

i don't know if it would be implied consent, i really wouldn't want to assume things like that for my warrentee. I agree that it would be a great idea, in fact thats what i was planing on doing, 1.6 will hold me for a while, then i'll grab a 2.1, or higher, when the price drops down and i get some money.

Thats what I plan on doing in about a year or so, 1.6 is plenty fast enough for office apps and games, as the games rely more on the gpu anyway.

Thanks guys.

A few more questions. Does anyone have experience with Dell upgrading the processor or doing it yourself is the only way? Does anyone know a good online shop for mobile processors?

Do it yourself or find a friend who can do it. Dell actually has a couple of pictures and step by step processes of how to change them somewhere on their site. Ive done a friends notebook before and its pretty easy, plus there will be more info or "how to's" on doing it when peeps on here start doing it in a few months. You'll be fine, dont waste ur money on a 2.0, if you must get faster I think the 1.7ish or 1.8ish is the best price/performance ration besides the 1.6. Places to buy, eBay or newegg tend to have the best prices... just make sure its new so you get the 3 yr intel warranty.
