Post your Sager 8790 idle temps. - Page 2

If you run Norton check your resources, the newer versions are very cpu intense even at idle.

I do run Norton Antvirus 2005. Is there an AV that uses less resources?
CAI's ETrust
Or even Avast uses less resources than Norton.

thanks guys, I am in the process of giving those AV's a try to see if my temps are better. I didn't think the Prescott's ran that hot?!
I know it is a smaller die with more things than a Northwood, but that is quite a bit hotter than a Northwood.

G-Omaha...just a question...If Clevo says that the unit's operating limits are 5-35 deg. celsius, why do you consider 36 cool?

Honestly, for a lappy in this class and price, we should'nt have to be doing all these mods and take these precautions to protect our investments.

I think that what you are stateing is taken out of context.

I say this because 5C is 41F and 35C is 95F.

The 36C, that I talk about is 96.8F - that's cooler than the "operator".

What was the entire "sentence" that Dave - or whomever at Sager relayed to you. A laptop with this much power just isn't capped at the temperature ranges that you indicate. Even the CPU is not overheating until well over 65C - some have higher overheating points - refere to Intel's web site for the exact particulars.

Having said all that, you might have a defective unit, as you indicated in another post, or it just might need a good cleaning - I can't tell from here. Best to send back and if you are totally unsatisfied, persue getting a refund for the unit.

Clevo says 5-35 deg celsius, not Sager. David at Sager just said it was "normal".
Are you saying the temps you posted were Fahrenheit, not celsius? You confused me with the operator thing

I posted both the celsius and Ferenheit temps that are converted. The "operator" is a human being that is essentially 37/38C or 98.6F. The 5-35 may be a tollerance that is above the room temps. If the room temp is 80F, it would be very illogicaly that the machine would run at 41F or even 97F for more than a moment. That was my point. I'd still like to see the entire conversation as something has been lost in either the translation or the delivery.

When pressed, my machine shows a temp (Mobmeter) of 53C when editing videos or rendering. Sometimes it is higher; however, I resort to the "Max Fans" (Fn+F10) when the unit reports temps in the 55C range and the temps rapidly fall back into the middle/upper 40C range - depending on what I'm doing.

OK, when it doubt, read the manual.

The specs that you site are the "room temperatures" that are OK to run the laptop and not the tolerances as you suggested. Shame....

Should I be concerned? My 8790 at idle always gets to 50c and then the fans come on and it brings it to 40c. At 40c the fans cut off and the temp quickly reaches to 50c again (probably in 2 mins or so) and the fans come back on to bring it back to 40c and the whole thing repeats.

Should I be concerned that it doesnt maintain a steady temp when idle?

pb,

That's normal behavior. Mine, which has the updated bios (Fn+F10 = Superfans), behaves a bit differently - Once I employ the Fn+F10, then the fans do not turn off until about 36C. This lowers the idle temps by 3 degrees or so (37/38C).

I would not worry about it.

I had just recieved my 8790 back from RMA and besides a number of other problems I noticed my temps idled at 38C but the fans never turned off... NEVER... I had maxfans on got it down to like 25C and stopped them still no fan shut-off... I have sent it back for RMA again giving Sager one last chance.

At least you guys can get max fans, after I reinstalled the OS on mine ( XP Pro w Sp2) and installed the new bios, I still can't get that elusive fn+f10 switch to turn max fans on, to work at all.
Wow! I just tried that Fn+F10 thing for the first time. Turned on them fans super fast (and loud) and brought it to 29c idle! (though, the fans remain on)

If I were to reboot the computer using Fn+F10, would it remember it? Or do I need to press Fn+F10 each and every time I turn on windows to have the fans run max?
Reboot resets it; however, try rebooting and see if the fans turn off at 40C or lower.
I tried both a reboot and I tried turning it off and then on and the same happens. I press the fn-f10 and the fans kick in full blast and remain perpetually on and the system stays idle at 29c-30c.

Are the fans supposed to kick off under 40c while using the "super fan" fn-f10 thing?

MW-Baboon, How are you able to check the temps of your hdrives? I use mobmeter and it only gives me one temp, the cpu. I wonder if it is due to the drives connected to the raid controller.
i think that when ur using raid that mobile meter will not display the HDD temps, i do not have my HDD's in a raid array config.
