are they gonna offer a higher MB video card???

Will the 4670 still be available when the 4680 comes out?

I'm still on the fence as to whether or not I want to wait for a 17" with a higher resolution. I've been reading rumors on this board about the possibility of a WUXGA on the 4680, but then others saying that it won't happen anytime soon.

I'm not a gamer so I'm not worried about how games will look on the current 17" display but I spend a lot of time in Visual Studo and using text editors so I'd like to maximize screen real estate if possible.

I went an played with a 17" Powerbook (I've read it's the same display), opened a text editor, and I guess it's not that bad. I also read that the 4760 will run my 21" CRT at 1600x1200 in a dual-monitor setup so that's an option for me as well.

Is anyone here using the 4760 as a primary development machine?

There's no way to know for sure. Sager planned to offer the 5670 and 8887 for a few weeks even after the release of the 8890 and 5680, but they sold out of them and they were not offered as soon as the new models came.

the new video card will be a radeon 9600 pro mobility with 128mb

enough to tie u down for a few years

no i do not believe the 4760 will still be available whewn 4680 comes out

sorry let me clarify I do not know FOR SURE

but...when the 5680 came out, the baseline model was $300 more than te baseline 5760..so I was using it as a point of reference

I have good reason to believe though that it will be considerably more expensive, considering what you are getting, especilly the upgraded video card

Just my opinion...you'll probably be waiting significantly longer than 20 days for the 4780, so don't count on an early October release.

17" can be deceiving.

If you compare it, it is the same height as a 15" but wider.

well...... that settles it..... i'll wait for the 4680 to come out and get that. All i wanted was the 17 inch with the full keyboard and i get a high end video card....... so i'm satisfied.

Just gotta go with one thing here...

as a "gamer" you dont want a widescreen. They tend to use obscure resolutions, which many games dont support. And of course, since performance is an issue, keep in mind the wide screen's higher res will tax your card (assuming you get a game to run at that res) more than a normal res...

cums?

Interesting choice of word useage....but ive heard the widescreen is really something to look at. But its not for gaming as you may not get the full screen effect for the wide screen. But again, i heard the WUXGA is a serious sight to behold..

Word useage?? Im not followin you here. I am simply saying a wide screen, no matter how clear, will be close to useless in games, since none will run at the res the Widescreen runs at...

Is this true?

1. Can you have problems with games due to the "special" resolution ratio? I thought Adam said that games outmatically strech out to fill the screen?

2. Is it true that you may notice a performance hit in games due to the 1400x900 res?

Adam please, any comments?

Cheers.

this is what is going to happen:
games will be in res 640x480, or 800x600 but they will be streched. So people will appear short and fat . But who cares! th 4760 is not meant to be a gaming lappy, get 5680 if your gonna play games.

Now Bear in mind, NEW GAMES are coming with wide screen support here are some:

GTA 3/GTA Vice City
Midnight Club 2
I think UT2003 also has widesceen support
Madden 2004
Warcarft 3? Prolly not,
I think Genrals has support also

Basiclaly a ton of new games will have wide screen support, and then you'll be happy with your 17inch wide screen.

Games have to be told what resolution to run at. However, normally, they only have support for certain types. Now, lets say you choose the one that is closest. Two things will happen here.

Your monitor will simply only use a 1024x768 block of pixels. The clarity will be there, but it will be stretched , since the screen itself is streched.

Your monitor wont do the resolutiuon at all.

And an odd size res is not the FPS killer. Its simply the higer res in general 800x600<1024x768..

I must be very dense today cause I just dont get why people say that the future 4780 is not a gamer's machine as oppossed to the 5680. Is it because of the SiS board? Cause honestly, it's the only difference I see between the two.

As far as the screen res goes, if there're some games already that accept wide-screen resses, Im possitive most of the future games will too, so I see no biggie there.

Cheers.
