Flat panel display question

I'm looking at the new low prices for 15" flat displays and have considered buying one. I just have a question for anyone who has a fair amount of experience with different ones (different specs).
These really cheap ones are always reviewed as ungameable, which I'm actually ok with. It would be a secondary monitor to replace my CRT 17" that's on a shelf that probably isn't made to support that much weight.
Therefore, I wouldn't be gaming (i have a 19" CRT for main display), or even watching video on it. But I've read about the slow rates on these screens (being similar to laptop screens), and how it can become a pain in the eyes.
Would I be advised against purchasing if I would use it regularly as a normal display.
How long do they tend to last.
and are they even worth spending the small price on them? or do they simply suck that bad?

basically, should i spend money on the bottom of the line flat displays? or is this something that bottom of the line just won't cut it for anything?

lcd's are better for your eyes.. they don't work like that. lcd's don't flash an image on the screen like crt's do, they display constant flourescent lit lights that change colors. unless your eyes are sensitive to flourescent lights (not many people's are), lcd won't bug your eyes. in general crt's are what are bad for people's eyes, not lcd's.

as to how long they last.. this depends on a lot of circumstances, but in general it's just as long as a crt. it'll probably last you until the next generation monitor technology comes out which replaces current lcd's.

for what you say you'll use it for, i wouldn't waste too much money on an lcd and would go for a cheap one. the problem you need to look out for here is dead pixels since refresh rate and contrast ratio shouldn't be an issue (since you plan on using the crt for gaming and video). also note that a 15 in. lcd has nearly the same screen size of a 17 in. crt which is a bonus.

awesome, I had tried to delete this thread a couple days ago cause i noticed one that's very similar and felt i was being redundant. Now i'm glad I didn't, thanks for the advice

Keep in mind too that LCD's have native resolutions and 15" screens can only go up to 1024x768. If you need desktop space, consider a 17" which does 1280x1024.
