OK, the 9300 is out because of the screen, What notebook should I get?

Being that the 9300 probably has an unacceptable LCD to me, I now need to determine a different notebook to buy.

My requirements in order of importance are:
17inch widescreen glossy LCD of good quality
WSXGA or WUXGA
Video card X700 128mb or greater performance-wise
2 hours + Battery life
Can't be extremely hot.
1.8 inches thick or less
must be able to change the batter without removing screws. (not any current Sagers)
must be able to change the harddrive without disassembling the whole notebook (not Sony)

Things I'm not as rigid on:
weight
general apperance
processor type

I think this pretty much rules out all currently available notebook. Oh, well, I'll keep hacking away on my Sony for a while. I've got my fingers crossed for a new AMD version from Sager soon.

No interest in the XPS2? As well, there are some amazing deals to be had on the original XPS.

iXPS2 is the same thing as the 9300. original XPS does not meet screen, thickness or video performance requirements.

Just to be clear, my complaint about the 9300 is the screen quality. People say the UXGA has the same sparkle problem that the 9200 had.
sonic,you sure?

from some of the reviews i read they said the screen on xps2 was 'gorgeous'.

I am sure they are trying to get rid of their awful 9200 (RIP) screens on 9300 owners but I thought they wouldn't try it with the xps2.

Good luck,i was in exactly the same boat as you until i went for the rock(sager)Glad i cancelled my 9300 early

It's a pity that dell managed to screw up a sure thing. They almost built the perfect, value, multimedia laptop but they compromised on the single most important thing-the screen. Stupid, greedy, golf playing fools

so you're seriously going to send back your 9300? looking at your sig i assume that you don't even have it yet, no offence, but how could you hate an lcd that you haven't even seen yet? if you do already have the laptop then ignore the question.
Sonicwind, just keep it for a few days and check it out! And while you are looking at the screen, you should leave all your bias about the display and ask yourself if its truely acceptable. I am saying this becuase you may already have it registered in your mind that any WUXGA screen from Dell will be bad.

The notebook has already been delivered. But it's in another city than where I am now. Of course I am going to look at it and ultimately decide for myself. But based on people's comments, and experience from the 9200, and the fact that I am currently using the Sony XBright screen, I'm afraid I'll be one of the most scrutinizing people there are. Unless it's just bad, I'll probably keep it for a week, then return it. Of the people that have received theirs and reported on it, it seems like the people who are younger or are getting their first laptops are the most happy, while the more experienced people are the least. I think I would be much less particular and sort of "star-struck" if this was my first notebook, too. No blame, I don't think they're dummies for keeping it. But they've got nothing to compare it, too, and aren't particular desirious to do so anyway. "The video card rocks, this thing rocks, what sparkles, I don't see any sparkles." Maybe they don't have to write code and read documents all day like me.

Anyway, it's all in fun. We're just having conversations here, posing ideas, imagining solutions. Something to do while we wait for our notebooks.

When will you be able to take a look at it? I'm really curious to get your opinion of the screen.

Thurdsay night, late. I'm really curious to get my opinion, too The one I'm forming based on other's opinions is like Chinese food. I feel full at first, but 2 hours later, I'm hungry again.

Dang, my thread hopped forums. Gee mod, this isn't about the 9300, it's about alternatives to the 9300. Now all I'll get is people trying to sell me 9300's.

"You like the sparkles, you love the sparkles, you must have the sparkles" (dangles 9300 screen, I mean sparkling crystal amulet, in front of my face)

or

"These are not the sparkles you're looking for". (Waves hand across my face.)

Your Jedi mind tricks won't work on me.

Lol - crying about your screen and wanting to buy a new one, when you haven't even seen it to make your own mind up yet!?

Where is the patience around this place?

Crying about my post? This is a discussion forum. I'm discussing. And you posted, but you obviously haven't read the whole thread.

Well I said you were crying about your screen, not your post, and yes I was using hyperbole for effect so I'm guilty there, but I still maintain that you're discussing taking back a laptop for a problem that it may or may not have that you haven't even seen yet and I find that very funny.

Actually, this thread is about alternatives to the 9300. If you want to start a thread complaining about people complaining about the 9300, you should go ahead. I might post in it. You've got a bit of a communication problem as you've misunderstood the thread, you've misunderstood that I was referring to you crying about my post. And you're still trying to communicate about something irrelevant. Hopefully this will help get you on track.

Before ordering the 9300 I was strongly considering a Sony A6xx custom order. Is the only reason you don't want another Sony is the difficulty in getting to the hard drive. If my 9300 screen sucks, I'll probably get one. Even though it will kill me to pay so much more for so much less computer, except for the screen of course.
Jim-H, that's the exact same boat I'm in. Are the price and lesser specs of the A6XX worth the gorgeous screen...

There are several reasons I don't like the Sony. I don't like the keyboard. It doesn't have svideo out. (It's on the docking station, but I don't, like, take that with me on trips.) The battery life and power functions are relatively crappy. It gets about 2 hours battery time, and will die if I leave it on standby unplugged over night. The notebook I used most before it was a a Compaq X1000. It got easily 4 hours battery life, and would hardly show any battery drop after being on standby all night. The Sony is actually pretty good looking and sort of hides it's size (by contours) until you get in front of it. Sony's are just not very developer/power/upgrade user friendly. They don't supply drivers for alternate operating systems. I had to buy a service manual and even it did not have instructions for replacing the harddrive, even though there were instructions for replacing the cpu and gpu! I still replaced my harddrive with a 7200 rpm 60 gig, but I had take apart a lot of sh!t, and sort of figure it out for myself. I half expected the notebook not to work after. I've been happy with Dells and that Compaq so far. I think Toshiba's are ugly, the Queersimo, doesn't come in high resolution, though it's OK looking. IBM doesn't make a 17 inch yet, and if they did it would probably be like 5 grand. I've tried a couple of Sager's. The first one was actually OK, a 5680, but the battery life was crappy and I just got nervous about the build quality and returned in like 2 days before the return time limit. The other one was an 8790 which was really cool, with RAID 0 and all, except not cool at all, as in hot, as in my wrists being hot all day while coding, no things. Plus they used 1/2 inch recessed screws to secure the battery. Yeah, like I can see myself changing the battery on an airplane so I can finish a movie. I flew the week after 9/11 (had to, I was out of town at the time, and had to come home) and they confiscated my little electronics screwdriver set at the security check. The told me, after I had already checked my bags and waited in the 2 hour line that I could go back and check it with my backpack if I wanted to.

Am I rambling?

That notebook is just ugly, and it's too thick, it doesn't have a 17 inch glossy screen. I guess the 9800 is a still a pretty sweet card though. Do those notebooks get very hot? What kind of battery life does it have? More than an hour?

Battery time is around an hour but you can get an upgraded battery for it.

Yeah it gets hot, but it is basically more powerful then most desktops.

I have that laptop at work and OMG its so so so incredible, we bought it for $4,300 . It's more powerful then the iXPS 2 will ever be, minus the 6800 Ultra, can score about 7400+ in 3DMark03 with some video card OCing.

I wish I could buy it now. Thats the deal of the century.
