9300 with K9975 screen (WUXGA)

Well, I just got it and have been playing around with it now for awhile uninstalling all the junk that dell forces on us. And the junk stays around too, uninstall doesn't clean it all out. How many people are really going to buy Quickbooks?

Anyways, I'm let down by this screen. There's nothing TrueLife about this unless M. Dell wears dirty glasses all day.

I avoided the 9200 because of all the unhappy users with the screens and had my hopes up when they started shipping with different screens that users were happier with.

Well, I now understand what the sparkly effect means and yes, it's distracting. It's really distracting on light backgrounds. It's like the screen has a matt finish or something on it. Just moving your eyes slightly moves the "effect" over the screen, and maybe that's the problem and what distracts. I'd rather stare at my 3yr old IBM 15" 1600x1200 screen. With it, you can move your eyes around and the image stays the same. The text is razor sharp. The dell screen definitely has something between you and the "real" screen that ruins it all and takes away from the sharpness of the text if you have a light background. White does not exist on this notebook. I've played around with switching to light gray backgrounds and that does improve a little. White text on a black background is beautiful. You've just got to avoid large areas with light colored background.

Don't ask, I don't know if I'm going to keep this. Only time will tell if I can deal with this screen or get use to it.

Other notes, I can hear the fan but it's no big deal. And I can hear the drive every now and then but that's no big deal either. So far it's a great notebook hampered by a subpar screen.

I'm taking delivery of an Australian 9300 in the next two weeks, I have the order confirmation saying it's a K9975. Any ideas on who makes this panel?

Also, can other Aussies confirm which panel is shipping with our laptops? Is everyone getting the K9975?

Yes, in theory. But pat is the only one so far who has said the K9975 is nasty to the point of distraction, so it'd be nice to verify what he has.

My packing slip says it's a K9975. Since last night when I first set it up in my dining room, I've used it wirelessly across the house in a dark family room and finally my dimly lit home office.

The lighting in the room affects how you perceive the screen. In the dining room (bright lights) when I first opened and used it, I was really let down. I wouldn't call it "nasty". Just distracting and taking away from the clarity of the screen. The more lit the room is, the more likely the coating "may" play tricks on your eyes. The effect is like those holograms 3d cards. You move your eyes slightly and the effect moves too. Coupled with such high resoluton and thin black text, it can be noticable. In the dark and dimly lit rooms, it was much easier to deal with and I got use to it and finally past it. It just takes getting use too. The light leakage doesn't bother me.

If anything, what's more bothersome now, is that in my quiet office, the fans are always on and very noticeable. I went out of my way to upgrade my desktop's power supply and ati card to quiet fans so I couldn't hear it. The 9300 is now the loudest thing in my office. I looked at the fan tool but it doesn't mention that it's 9300 friendly.

Also, this is my first 17" wide notebook and it's taking quiet some time to get use to typing on it. I keep placing my hands wrong.

6 cell battery so far says 2hrs remaining at 94%. I'm charging the 9 cell now. One nice thing is the batteries have a button on them to indicate charge.

Sound quality is very good.

Pat, it would be useful if you could identify your LCD maker using this tool:
http://www.download.com/PowerStrip/3...ml?tag=lst-0-1

I'm very familiar with those holographic artifacts you're referring to, but I've never heard of them associated with the Samsung LCD, which is what your LCD should be according to your Dell part number. That's why confirmation with PowerStrip would be helpful.

And i8FanGui should work fine with the 9300, and will let you decide when the fans kick in.

SirBA you said you had the LG screen?? Hmmm

PowerStrip is reporting LPL0000 so I guess my packing slip is wrong and I have the LP. Will wait to see what others report and then I'll think about getting the screen switched if another model (maybe the samsung) gets better reviews.

What date is the official 21 days from?

thanks
