wierd drive errors

I have 2 laptop drives, an older 40gb 5400rpm and a brand new 60gb 7200rpm drive. i wanted to use both in the laptop. both drives work fine solo, as well as when placed in my usb drive enclosure. However, when both drives are in the system, windows will lock up due to massive amounts of drive activity about 15 seconds after windows finishes booting up. Raid is off (being 2 dissimilar drives, raid is out of the question). Any ideas?

Look at the Master/Slave requirements for the drives and what they are set at. Then look at the manual again and make sure that the setting are correct. Sometimes the older HDDs may not allow you to switch the setting.

already checked that. the drives using no jumpers are set to master, and jumpered set it to either slave or cable select. while i have tried these, none of them should matter cause the 8790 puts each of its 2 drives on indepentant channels, so both drives should be the master of thier separate chain.

So.......... Is that what the manual states???? I always thought that they shared the same I/O channel - but that's just me.

dont have the manual anymore, but you can clearly tell that they are on separate channels when it boots up, specially if you start messing with the master/slave settings manually instead of letting it auto handle the job.

If you have the O/S on both of the drives. Try blowing away the partition on the one that you don't want to use and try again. Repartition and then reformat the drive that you blew away the partition on.

I had this issue and it's the driver that Windows XP loads for the controller. Blow out the driver for the controller and load the one off the CD. It may have been replaced during an update by microsoft, saying it was newer.

thanks for the help guys, but so far no go. tried blowing the partitions, it still dont want to accept both drives at once. as for the promise drivers, i tried loading the ones off the sager website (i cant find my old cds) and windows BSODs about 3 seconds into the loading windows screen, every time. Until i rolled back to the MS driver set. Would the drivers on the cd be different? if they are, would one of you post them for me? I looked around on the promise website, but coudlnt figure out exactly which driver set i needed.
