OK, the 9300 is out because of the screen, What notebook should I get?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Being that the 9300 probably has an unacceptable LCD to me, I now need to determine a different notebook to buy.

My requirements in order of importance are:
17inch widescreen glossy LCD of good quality
WSXGA or WUXGA
Video card X700 128mb or greater performance-wise
2 hours + Battery life
Can't be extremely hot.
1.8 inches thick or less
must be able to change the batter without removing screws. (not any current Sagers)
must be able to change the harddrive without disassembling the whole notebook (not Sony)

Things I'm not as rigid on:
weight
general apperance
processor type

I think this pretty much rules out all currently available notebook. Oh, well, I'll keep hacking away on my Sony for a while. I've got my fingers crossed for a new AMD version from Sager soon.

There is no notebook that meets those requirements, unfortunately.

I might compromise on that one, or the X6000, since it's more purty to me.

The WUXGAs have a sparkly effect, especially in white or green backgrounds. The whites are noticeably not pure white as well. There's lots of details in the Dell forums.

I'm as picky as I know of better screens. I currently have a Sony with a WUXGA glossy screen. I've also had a Sager 8790 with a WSXGA screen. Both were great, the Sony being the best. I can actually turn down the Sony screen in full room light and still be optimal. If the room is dark, it is simply too bright.

Have you had a look at the LG LW70?
I have the lower of the LW70 range and it probably wouldn't meet your requirements as far as video mem/res etc (64MB X600) but the screen should (IMHO) it's as good as the Toshiba's & Sony's.
The top of the range has more video mem and a higher res...
It's slim and lightweight (compared to a HP 17" P4 which I returned due to a max of 1hr 20min battery life), runs DDR2 RAM and a SATA HDD.
All things considered it's a pretty good compromise with no compromise on screen quality :-)

9300 doesn't have a sparkly screen like the 9200 but a glossy screen ... (trulife by dell ...)

I love my Fujitsu N6010 and I have no hesitation recommending it . Awesome 17" screen, and awesome build quality. The latter is something I didn't think would be too important until I got it. Doing anything other than intensive games (HL2, CS) I can get over two hours quite easily.

Anyway thought you might like to know I'm very happy with my choice.

Heh. Check the Dell forum for updates on that. People are receiving their 9300s and they're sparkly.

The soon to be released Fujitsu M4438 meets the screen and GPU requirements but the fact that it supports two HDDs would indicate that it does not meet the weight/size requirements although it does look relatively slim judging by the picture...

Thanks for all the input. That Fujitsu M4438 looks very promising. I can't find anything about more detailed specs though. If anyone knows of any, please post.

There really is not much information about it so far. When I Googled for it I got only a German web page covering CeBit where it was only mentioned by name. However, given its M designation it's pretty certain that it's a Pentium M based laptop and in this case specifically a Sonoma laptop given the 6800 Go GPU, and it should be relatively lightweight. The Amilo M series are all Pentium M based aimed at mobile computer use while the Amilo D series are Pentium 4 based aimed at being desktop replacement. Here's where it should be listed when released, under Amilo M Widescreen.

So, I'm getting more and more interested in it, not only because of the screen which of course is important, but also because I was let down by the lack of Sonoma features on the i9300. Considering that this is a late Sonoma release and that the M4438 is maybe the first Sonoma laptop to offer S-ATA then chances are it also has other exclusive features like Azalia HD sound and ExpressCard support. I'll definitely wait a while longer and see what exactly it will offer before making up my mind...

It looks like the Amilo series is not targeted for the US. I don't know much about Fujitsu laptops, but I would assume there will be a US LifeBook version. Hope so anyway.
