this is my first post, and i'm looking at purchasing my first notebook this week.
i'm a bit of a sony fan, but i had a very extensive look at all types of sony/toshiba laptops, and i've well and truly decided that the M40 is for me.
the M40/7009 (the 1.86Ghz) is more expensive here in australia than its canadian counterpart, but it's got some different things under the hood. like only a 60gb hdd, but 1gb of ram. our version comes with professional, not home, has inbuilt bluetooth... to give you an example of price, the australian and canadian dollar are pretty close atm... the top model M40 is retailing here for $3700, with the lower model at $3100... but i'm used to being ripped off a bit in australia.
i went to a few stores to look at one today, because stores only really started stocking them in australia this week. i've been reading what ppl have been saying about the PCI express slot being blocked off. i've had a look at the M40/M45 review from notebookreviews.com, and from what i've seen, it really does look like the canadian/american versions have it blocked off, as there is that silver plastic thing in front of it, which is NOT in the australian models i've checked out. both slots pci/express are black, and they are advertising the pci express as a big feature for the M40 in australia. i'd direct you to the brochure i'm looking at atm, but toshiba australia are yet to upload it to their site (they don't even have a graphic for the M40 section yet), but if you ever get a chance to look at the australian brochure, you'll see exactly what i mean.
anyway, what i'm really after is a couple of answers to some rather noobish qns. i'm used to desktops, and as i've said before, this is my first foray into the portable market... the one thing i don't like about the M40/7009 in australia is the hdd. it's a 60 gb (4200rpm) drive, which i would really like to change if possible. so... seeing as i'm more than able to change a hdd on my desktop, would i be able to change the hdd on my laptop myself, or do i need someone else to do it for me? and secondly... what hdd do i need? do i need to buy one speficially from toshiba for the M40, or can i just buy any 2.5 inch hard drive? also, is there anything i should watch out for when buying a hdd? are there any brands to stay away from or rush to?
