A Two-Button Apple Mouse

In other news, Hell has not frozen over yet, but it very well may.

According to sources who have so far filed accurate reports on Apple's future hardware plans, the company is feverishly working on a two-button wireless optical mouse that it intends to release.

Apple enthusiasts have longed for an Apple-branded two-button mouse for over a decade, but their requests have gone unanswered. So what has changed? According to sources, 'it's the company."

With Apple now profiting from low-priced consumer electronics as it makes a push to reclaim market share from Windows, a two-button mouse is 'almost an essential,' sources said.

It's unclear when the computer maker plans to introduce the mouse. Insiders warned that anticipation may continue to build for months as the company perfects the product.

Apple has just recently reduced the price of its wired mouse to $29 and its wireless optical mouse to $59. The two-button wireless optical mouse would likely debut at the $69 price point once reserved for the company's current wireless mouse.

"Jaws will drop," said one insider.

Woah there buddy. One step at a time. The public needs a few years to get aquainted with this new fangled 2 button mouse technology. Innovations need to be tested, introduced and eased into people's daily lives. If accepted 2 button mice will start appearing everywhere if there is enough demand for them. And Apple will be at the fore front of this technological revolution.

apple should stick to one button, it is iconic there is no need to change it.

the one big button on the powerbook feels much nicer than smaller double buttons on other notebooks. i honestly like the one button thing while i am not doing anything that needs tow buttons (such as games).

i have a nice 5 button mouse as well and i use it when i am powering my self up and i add function to the extra buttons ( in my case expose). but i am just saying apple should stick to shipping with 1 button mice, they have been using them for so long now that there is no point of changing it.

8 button one wheel mouse muwhahaha! i've beaten you all!

Now back on topic...

I've used Mac cubes and G5's at school a lot. But I got to thinking... what on earth would they need a second button on a mouse for? I mean... it worked just fine with one. Thats really one of the major things that seperated apple from pc's. And if its going to be benifical now... what on earth took so long?

Odd, I've been using two (or many more) button mice with OS X since release and never noticed anything wrong. Oh, right, I forgot people seem to think that with Macs, the single button mouse that ships with some is the only one that works right, just as somehow the cheep Compaq only works with the two button mouse with no scroll wheel that it came with...

If Apple makes their own multibutton mouse, woo, big deal. It's been rumored likely to happen probably 24 hours after the Mac was announced in 1984.

The laptops though I do sometimes wish had a choice for two buttons though, but only sometimes. Having owned my powerbook now for a good year and a half, it is second nature to only have one button on it. I then have issues any time I try and use the touchpad on the 9100.

i think apple are just doing it to remove switcher fears, i have seen some mac haters speculate that apple computers do not support multibutton mice. so this move would just be a way for apple to break into the pc market.

The ironic thing is that OSX is designed for two buttons and a scroll wheel.

it scaleable.
and since when has it been dependant on a scroll wheel? or a second button on a mouse?

sure i do like having one it does make things easier (well i dont realy need a second button but the scroll wheel is a must) but mac os x is not dependant on any of those features.
