I'm currently looking for a purely desktop work oriented machine, for which I basically only need a mainboard, a cpu, some RAM and a tower including psu.
Now since I refuse to use Intel, call me ignorant I don't care, I'm only interested in AMD-based systems. So far, so good.
Socket A is really cheap, so about 200$ will get you an okay machine, with 2200+XP, 256 MB, NoName motherboard incuding VGA, sound and LAN, and a midi tower.
I thought it might be nice to have the option to upgrade to a 64bit system in 1 year or 2, if the need will present itself, for whatever reason that might be.
Now 939 systems are quite steep, when you're looking for really low-budget but 754 is a good deal, or so I thought. One clerk, or one shop rather, told me that 754 is practically dead. AMD is not supporting that platform anymore and I should expect that in 1 year there won't be any CPUs out there for peope to buy, riiight.
Another shop owner told me "if you want a 754 board, you would need a 64bit Sempron and that's really expensive". WTF? 64bit Sempron?
So I told him that I'd use a Sempron without 64bit extension, which I never ever heard of. "But you can't use an A socket Sempon on a 754 socket!" No shit.. I was so close to slamming my head on the counter right there. Or slamming the clerk. Either way would've made sense.
