First notebook, first Apple!

Finally I got me a notebook. After very hard decicion and over a month of search I decided to go with the 15" Powerbook G4 superdrive.

My first impression? Wow..

My father came home very late with the PB but when he did arrive i immediedly plugged it in and waited for the battery to be fully charged, read the manual and just watched the computer, damn it's beautiful.

Finally the wait was over, 3 hours to school but I didn't care, my first notebook was ready. I turned it on, very quiet. Then came some very easy setups, asking me my name and so on. Having used windows in very long time this was amazing. The computer was up & running, ready to go the internet after about 8 minutes. Just simply amazing. I started getting some programs, just trying the computer out. Just great. Thin, light, small, beautiful, power. What more do you want?

I read some cons about the computer, dead pixels, the hatch doesn't close, not very long battery.. I seem to have been very lucky. I have no dead pixel, the hatch closes perfectly and on my first test I got about 3 hours and 15 minutes, and that was downloading, installing, surfing. Just fooling around. I was impressed, but just to be sure, since I'm going to use this computer at school I got a extra battery, it amazed me how light the battery was, I was expecting much heavier battery.

Now I've been using this computer for about whole day and I must say, it was even more than I expect it. In every way.

The only cons that I have noticed, since I'm very new in this is finding every program I used in windows. Some of them doesn't work in apple and I have no idea what is simular to them that works in Apple, but I think google will help me with that.

And also the one-mouse thing, that annoys me a bit, but that is just something I will have to get used to, and also just learning how the Mac os X works.

If somebody is looking for a notebook that is good in schools and if you like to you can even play games on I would reccomend the 15" Powerbook.

I looked at all the other apple notebooks and I found the 14" iBook is just.. Well it's ugly compared to powerbook I think, and the 12" iBook has to little power with to little screen. Both of them on the other hand have acctual battery life.

The 12" Powerbook has power, style, it's quite good acctualy, but if you need some extra firewire, usb and you are watching alot of movies on your screen, and also reading alot from it I say, take the 15" the battery life can be fixed with a extra battery. And I think about 3 hours is quite good. I probably can get 4 hours when I have the bluetooth turned off, brightness low and so on.

I also purchased the Ipod mini, I've had all the regular ipod“s. All the generation ( accept for the photo ). Let me just tell you.. If you have a lot of mp3 and listen to it all. Get the 20-40gb big ipods. But if you are like me have about 10gb's of mp3, but only listen to like half of it. And use your about alot at school and so on. Get the ipod mini, it's perfect. It's small, it's beautiful, it's light and you can get it in 4 different colors

So over all.. Looking for a notebook? Want to try something new? Get the 15" Powerbook, you wont regret it.

Pictures coming soon and btw.. My first review ever about something

Which software are you needing a Mac-version for? I can direct you to some good alternatives.

Good post, by the way. Glad you're enjoying the computer. For fun, open as much stuff as you can and play it. See how much it can process before it finally slows down a tad.

i had a discussion on another site about mac versions of windows apps read it here http://www.byodkm.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1541 i might post a little thread later on some time.

for the one button thing, pressing control while clicking will give you the right click function and if your powerbook does not have a scrolling trackpad (Rev.b or before) here is a driver that enables it http://www-users.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de/~razzfazz/

my first notebook (and current) is also a 15 inch powerbook and it is great

enjoy it.

you could get ms office for mac, but if your looking into a cheaper option you can get iwork by apple.

or even better openoffice or neooffice (cocoa version of open office) http://www.neooffice.org/ and http://www.openoffice.org/

for the ftp client there are many, but the best are transmit and cyberduck. cyberduck is free transmit will cost a bit. you can always use the ftp client in finder (go > connect to server..) but it is rather slow compared to a normal ftp client.

Hey warrior congrats and hope you enjoy 'them apples'. You were smart in this, you got yourself a pb (instead of that ugly thing they call an ibook). For school and traveling pb's are awesome.

Vectorworks is a CAD programme for OS X: http://www.nemetschek.net/vectorworks/
post #13 of 28
re: vectorworks, look for academic versions if u r a student. will run u around $200 if u can get the academic discount. if u r not a student, u might want to see if u can find a site that doesn't require proof of student status for a purchase, as may ppl do w/ the MS Office academic version.

how similar is vectorworks to proE and autoCAD? can you use vectorworks files in proE or autoCAD, or the other way around?

Same here...lol

Great first ever review....lol...I am thinking about getting a 15inch Powerbook myself for school..Right now..I am going to CompUSA....buying different laptops..and returning it...in the end..I will have experienced all that I was initially looking at...and know which one to buy....this weekend..i got the Sony FS....great.but not so good with dark images on the screen...and lets not get into battery life...I exchanged it today for the old Sony S260...and man.....even if it is on the older chipset...the performance of this thing (unplugged and plugged) is simply faster than the FS series..even though they have the same specs (...1.6Ghz....512MB....and the 4200RPM)....the Sony S series does have a dedicated graphics card...and so I am waiting to finish downloading the demo version of Tribes Vegeance...as a matter of fact..i am in my bed typing this post away....man.....I was scared that this S series would be so small...since I just started wearing glasses...but man.....did I have little faith.....sorry to go off topic...

Hopefully I will get test out the powerbook....the apple guy says I should go with the 12inch for portability since i will be carrying ig text books...but I don't know yet..wish it had backlit keyboard.....One question..did you get any discounts....15inch PB with superdrive is like $2200..is it not?

I like your signature..where u have Ipod shuffle - 512MB - life is random

You should add "because" before the word "life"....lol

The blacklit keyboard is just a thing made by apple just for the looks. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful and really nice to look at, but like I said it is only for the looks, the light of the screen is always enough to see the keyboard.

My friend has the 12" PB and let me tell you it's tiny.. But I think i know of a way to figure out which one to get.

The both have the same weight ( almost you cant even feel the difference )
the 12" is surely alot smaller, very portable. But.. If you are going to watch alot of DVD's on your computer and using the screen alot, writing & reading and so on I would definetely go with the 15"

Either way you go, you have made the right decision!

haha this thread topic attracted me.

going to get my first notebook too .. but still deciding whether will it be my first apple

anyway.. is it advisible to get the powerbook if im going to do lots of programming ?

and which model should i go for.. 12 or 15.2? i will be going oversea for studies. thus this notebook will be my only rig.

Ah, programming is one of the things OS X is great for. It comes with a full software development environment and with it's unix compatibility it makes porting apps to and from other systems much easier.

If you need a super mobile system the 12 would be the best, but if you need more resolution than 1024x768 get the 15. It might be advisable to pick up a mac mini while you're at it so you can use it to compile stuff while you use the PowerBook for other things, though then you'd need to get a monitor, keyboard and mouse too.

I'm planning to buy a pb 15" myself.
But I don't know/doubt which extra's I should get.

The one thing I would do for sure is getting 1GB of ram on 1 stick.

But should I get the 128MB videocard?
The bigger hard disk?
