First lappie - 9300 - Help needed with a few concepts and terms

Thanks for reading.

Decided I'm going for a 9300. This'll be my first laptop.

* Firstly I wondered about the graphics cards. When you're using applications and not playing games, will the Go 6800 still use more power than the X200 and/or X300? What sort of a power/heat difference could be expected in these cases? Does it only sap power when playing games? Also, does the graphics card come with an internal fan? I need to keep noise down as much as possible.

[I primarily use a lot of applications (mainly for professional music recording) and wouldn't particularly like a power-hungry graphic card sapping power or generating excess heat when I'm not using any of its features at any one time.]

* On the UK's 9300 customisation page, there are two options for "2 x 512MB DDR2 Ram", one being £164 extra, and the other £399! What's the difference, if it's not a typo?!

* Is "PC4200" DDR2 RAM significantly better than PC3200? The Inspiron 9300 uses PC3200. How does the PC3200 differ, compared with PC4200?

* I'm getting the Intel ProWireless 2915 802.11a/b/g Mini PCI Wireless LAN Card option. I'll obviously need a transmitter so I can receive the internet signals. Is that what the products below are for?:-

Dell Wireless 2350 Broadband Router UK/Irish
Dell Wireless 4350 Access Point

.... If so, what is the difference between those two, and which is best? How far do they transmit? Is it better to grab another transmitter from a different brand?

* Why can't we get a 9-cell as the first battery, as opposed to having a 6-cell as a primary choice with a 9-cell as a secondary option?

* What will the BlueTooth module (Dell Wireless 350 BlueTooth 2.0) allow me to do? Could I grab this at a later date if desired (as I don't currently have any BlueTooth peripherals yet)?

* Mice - Is the "Kensington Pocket Mouse Pro Wireless - USB Receiver" really nice, and worth the extra £25? Or should I just select the standard Dell mouse and then buy another wireless optical elsewhere?

* What does the 9300 laptop look like without a snap on cover?

* Regards the "Dell Media Experience 3.0 Delux", on reading the details, it sounds just like Microsoft's Windows Media Player 9. What's the difference?

* For support, what is the difference between the bog-standard "Basic Support" and the "1 Year European Collect and Return Service"? The price difference is over £220.

* Lastly(!), the UK customisation page gives you a free printer. I don't want one! I already have an Epson R800!

Thanks, for any points, gratefully recieved.

Kie

PS. Do Dell actually answer emails?! I've sent two over the last two weeks and had no replies.

1. I can't think of any applications apart from games that would use the 6800 fully, so the x300 w/128MB will be ok for you. The x300 will consume much less power, and I think batter lives foes up to at least 3.5 hours with the 6-cell battery, and even more with 9-cell. Yes, the GPU have their own cooling fans.

2. I am guessing that the cheaper price is for the PC3200, while the latter is for the PC4200. In this case, I would suggest you get the faster RAM, i.e. the PC4200 because that would give you a larger bandwidth; thus, higher data tranfer rates.

3. You will need the 2350 wireless router, unless you already have a non-wireless router connected to your broadband connection. In that case, all you will need is the 4350 Access Point, which you will connect to your current router.

4. No idea about the battery. Here in the US, you can get wither as your first battery.

5. The bluetooth module will allow you to connect your computer to other bluethooth devices, such as, cellphones for phone book synching or picture transfer, other computers, PDAs, mouse and keyboard. In the US, you can order the module at a later date via Dell Spareparts, not sure about UK.

6. Never seen of used the Kensington mouse. But I am sure I can get it cheaper that US4 50 in the States.

7. Its white with silver lining.

8&9. No idea.

10. Get the free printer, take the cartridges out, sell them on Ebay and throw the printer away! You will get more money for the cartridge only than the whole printer. Go figure!

11. I have heard of alot of people getting replies to their emails here in the US.

Alright....gotta go....UPS just delivered my 9300. Hope this helps!
