Review of my 9300 WUXGA with TrueCrap®, which I just received.

* I am posting it here, and not in "review" section because most of the paranoia associated with WUXGA's on 9300 was/is happening here, and I would like to review the screen only, moderators, please move/link this thread to reviews if you find it appropriate, so here we go...

Well, my UPS should come this hour, so let me start writing this review right away. (Before I see the screen).
First of all – if you have not seen my previous posts – yea, I’m totally paranoid about the screen. So yea, I used a lot of “CRAP” word all the time.
Well, my laptop is here.

My paper invoice tells me that its K9975, my online invoice/service tag check tells me that it is J9662, so go figure.

PowerStrip refuses to show that info, says it has not access to it.
Booting Knoppix…..
Knoppix boot is beautiful as of itself, but I’ve sever seen it looking SO beautiful!
Yep, Knoppix tells me it is LPL0000, which is LG.
I guess that means that forget about your invoice part numbers – check the hardware info when you get your laptop – that is the only way to know which panel you really have.
Well, as I open the laptop – you can clearly see that the screen is glossy.
Turning it on…
Ok, let me say right away – the screen is NOT bad.
The worst I can say is that it’s probably as good as any other Dell WUXGA (say 9100), but it’s hard to compare since this one is glossy and 9100 is not. And of course this one is 17incher, while 9100 is 15.

The screen does have some sparkling, but I was always saying that its not a problem. It’s just that people could not find more acronyms for the crapiness of 9200 lcd’s, so everything was described as being “sparkly”.

The problem with 9200s was that their screens were horrendous, not that it had a lot of sparkling.
This one definitely has way less sparkling that 9200s had.

The main point is that – I am keeping this one.
You can’t possibly even start comparing it with what I’ve seen on 9200, this one is definitely better. Way better.

Another point is that someone who’s never heard of sparkling thing would have never complained or noticed that effect on this screen, that’s for sure.

What I wanted from this display is razor sharp text and decent brightness, both of these it has.
I checked both pdfs and html/chm files and both look at least as good as they looked on Dell’s 15 inch WUXGA panels, maybe even better. The reason I can’t say definitively which one is better is because this one is glossy, and 15 inchers were not.

Another comparison I can make is – I have a bunch of dell 21 inch LCDs, and I would prefer to do the reading from my new 9300 laptop, so it does have a bit better screen.

How about comparing it to Sony’s Xbrite? Well, as for me – I won’t pay for sony, it just not worth for me. I wanted a good screen, I got it, and for that kind of a price – yea, I think it well worth it.

Please don’t ask me for pictures. It just doesn’t make sense, you will see my picture on YOUR monitor. And of course camera that took the picture won’t help much as well. I don't have any other laptops here, so I can't make a screen to screen comparison on a picture.

I will be glad to answer any other specific questions about the screen.

Hmm, I'm pretty convinced at this point that Dell is shipping multiple panels from LG. The fact that PowerStrip couldn't read your EDID information suggests that you've got something different from those who can.

Let me know if there's anything you can do to better identify that LCD. I won't ask you to crack open your case, but that may be the only way.

(Oh, and congrats! Sounds beautiful!)

Sounds good. Thanks for the write up.

Wait a sec, you mean that knoppix says that it is LPL0000 is not enough for you?

Well, that pretty clearly id's it as an LG, but I think all LG panels come back with that id. Even the WXGA+.

bbstls, I am glad that you like the screen. I do too....so is it time to change your signiture yet. I think Dell deserves a little credit here.

Well, I think you were probably the most pessimistic poster when it came to the 9300's display, so to hear you say that you like it and are keeping it, is good news for me. Thanks for the review.

ya, it is nice to hear some people are going to be very happy with the new 9300.

bbstls,
Truly happy for you!
Out of all people, I thought you would return it for sure. And look at you now, smiling, right?
Guess I am going to miss the angry-TrueCrap-coining character.
Well, let you spend some more time with your new machine (at least stare at the screen a little more). Looking forward to seeing more review comments from you.
Meanwhile, I continue to wait for my 9300.....

Yep, this is turning out to be a great mystery for me. What fun. 2k worth of fun. Now I'm wondering if the differences in people's opinions are just that. Except that I saw the 9200 WXGA screen and thought it was horrible, and most people seem to think it's good. Whatever only 32 more hours to go til I see mine.

Yeah, I'll probably miss grumpy ole "Everything is CRAP"-bbstis, too! LOL...god, I knew this would happen! Very glad to hear you like it fine and the worrying was unfounded...this bodes well for XPS2 customers as well, then. Y'know, it'd be great if you could find something else about the lappy that pissed you off, though...then you could continue stomping around the forum, huffing and saying 'CRAP' with a loud Scottish accent...Congrats!

Can you please throw in a few more "TrueCrap' lines just for fun?
I reckon in a month's time when everyone gets their 9300 that we come back to the forum and everyone posts a comment and we do a poll. At this stage we have too many mixed opinions yet very few people have seen the screens or done a true comparison with others.

Congrats bbstis. Nice to know you are keeping yours.

The one I'm getting I'm calling TrueBlight. Has a nice ring to it, I think. Smell UltraStank TrueBlight screen.

damn that makes me feel so much better...... Dell does have great notebooks for the bargain price that they provide, but like all things, nothing is perfect. thanks bbstis for the promising review.

Congrats BBSTIS on your new toy. You have injected some "peace of mind" for the rest of us who are still in the Building Stage otherwise known as "read-the-forums-and-get-discouraged-while-you-wait Stage." I have ordered my very first laptop/9300 and will ship on 3/29. I will enjoy it and will be the envy of my friends. Thanks again BBSTIS.

My question is......Is the TrueCrap display worth the extra $100?
