Best gaming/video editing laptop for 2 grand?

Thread Starter
As the topic suggests, I am currently in the market for a DTR notebook not to go over (before tax anyway) 2 grand. I will be using this laptop as a gaming/video editing and general usage machine.

I recently came across 2 decent deals and wanted to know what you guys would go with (or if you are aware of a better deal, thats cool too ):

Dell XPS Gen 1 $1999.99
3.4 GHz P4 EE
1 GB Dual Channel DDR 400
60 GB 4200 HD
15.4" UXGA Screen
256 MB Radeon Mobility 9800
DVD/CDRW
XPS Bag (A nice little throw in, I need a bag anyway)

Dell XPS Gen 2 Same price
2.0 GHz Sonoma
512 MB Dual Channel DDR 533
60 GB 4200 HD
17" UXGA Screen
256 MB Geforce Go 6800 Ultra
DVD/CDRW

Which would you go with and why? All of the benchmarks for the XPS 2 have the 2.13 GHz Sonoma and 1GB of Ram. I'm wondering how that will effect the benchies. Would it STILL be faster than the XPS even with 1/2 the ram AND a slower processor? Thanks much for the input.

Also, weight and battery life really don't matter too much. I will be bringing it to the occasional lan party and to work occasionally but it only has to last like. . .an hour or so on battery power. As long as its under 15 lbs with power adapter--I can handle it.

The XPS Gen 2 should still be faster for gaming. The 6800 Ultra makes a BIG difference. I'd think about upgrading to a GB of RAM at some point though. If you do a lot of floating point intensive work I'd consider the Gen 1; otherwise the Gen 2 is going to be faster, lighter and cooler, as well as having a glossy widescreen LCD.

I'd choose the xps2 as it is a much newer product with a much much better video card. You will be able to switch out the hard drive later and add ram, but the video card is something much harder to change. If they are coming out close to the same cost, certainly a xps2.

I'd go with the gen2. Since you're looking for a DTR the 17" inch shouldn't be a reason not to get it. Like Tellerve said though, you'll definitely want to add more RAM and a better HD (at least 5400RPM...) eventually. Dell's RAM is overpriced though, so it'd be better to upgrade from a third party anyway. Any idea if the 512MB RAM on the gen2 is one or two sticks? Also, what kind of discounts are you using? There might be a better time to get the gen2 when there's better coupons available.

if the coupon's still good, you can get a 9300 (same as the XPS2 except with a slightly lower-powered version of the 6800 video card) for about $700.00 cheaper.

Hmm for video editing i heard the Powermac was pretty good, but i dont think you wanna go down that road.

P4 is better than P-M for video editing (or encoding, to be exact), but Geforce 6800 Ultra is better than MR9800 for gaming. A tough choice.

In any case, 4200 RPM hard drive may be too slow for video capture (but not necessarily), but I guess you have an external HD.
